Notes: https://slow.pics/c/oZiAyvcZ As you can see in the comparison, the original 1080 bd edition suffered from an incorrect bt2020 -> bt709 linear transformation done with a simple color remap. And since the red and orange colors in the bt2020 version were artificially expanded to approximately 80% of the coverage of this color matrix, this method (color remapping) created a strong shift towards pink. Since it is in this direction (pink tint) that the color clipping intensifies with a simple cropping bt2020 -> bt709, like with Amazon.
I did a proper saturation preservation + chroma remapping within the bt709 gamma 2.4 spec using DaVinci Resolve, which resulted in correct colors (like Amazon) but no clipping.
Of course, this does not give such a juicy and contrasty picture as the Amazon version, but it should not be like that, it should be “normal”, if you know what I mean. Apparently Amazon did the conversion with Adobe tools that still don’t work well with bt2020 and create color clipping at some stage of the conversion.
In addition to finding a solution and adjusting the parameters for color conversion, it took a lot of time to adjust the downscaled image from 4k to 1080 and fix the problems in the UHD version that arose due to the use of Sony RS + to scale the image from the original DCI 2K 2.35. A lot of time was spent on selecting and testing cleaning settings, dehalos, etc. The HEVC setup process also caused a separate headache, which actively resisted and saved low bitrate due to the small vertical resolution of the frame (816p), I had to control the bitrate almost manually, but the result, in my opinion, was worth all these efforts. Now I want to repeat all of this with 3.333 to create a 1080 version with the correct colors.

Thank you Jensen for your study and extensive work on preserving the colors. Hope you’ll be able to do the same with Evangelion 3.333, 1080 version.

Incredible! I love reading about the technical breakdown of the methods used to achieve fixing these. Thanks!

Are you going to do the earlier cut of 1.01? It is available in HD on the Italian Blu-ray (albeit 720p-only) and in a heavily-compressed 1080p on the French Blu-ray.
The Italian version is a much better source despite being 720p. It is a 35mm filmout scan done in 2K. And the 2K is downscaled to 720p on the Italian Blu-ray.
The French Blu-ray only has a Dolby Digital 5.1 track but the Italian Blu-ray has a Dolby Digital EX 6.1 track which is better, even if the bitrate may or may not be different. The Italian track may show up as 5.1 but that is because it’s matrixed 6.1, meant to be decoded. But the French disc is plain 5.1 while the Italian is EX 5.1 (or 6.1).
Also, I hope you finally do a separate encode of the 3.33 pre-roll short film. Maybe as a bonus with 3.333, despite it being made for the previous version.

Been a long time, thanks.

Well worth the wait.
Thanks for the hard work!

Welcome back, Jensen! It’s been a while, but it’s definitely worth the wait! Thank you so much for putting in the effort to fix the color issues with the 1080p version and for encoding all of Evangelion! We are really happy with the results. And also, looking forward to your rerelease of 3.333. Cheers!! <3

Thank you for this. I have been eagerly anticipating this.

The 4K release of 3.0+1.11 (which this is a downscale of) is an IMAX Enhanced release like with 3.333’s 4K release.

Man, this looks fucking fantastic. Amazing work…
I have no idea how you managed to keep it from artifacting on a scene like this without manually throwing more bits at it with zones. did you?
Ah. You did. It was well worth the effort, good shit!
had to transcode it with constrained VBV for a single playback client that also throws a hissy fit over open GOP and sometimes >~8 b-frames - it didn’t turn out too bad considering it ended up being about 1/4 the size https://files.catbox.moe/sankre.png
compare that to the Amazon WEB-DL lmao https://files.catbox.moe/m2n5at.png
which weighs in at about double the size of my lazy “way too re-compressed because of annoying software” above
thank you!
Jensen
Thank you for your kind words. If you or someone else suddenly needs this version, but encoded according to 2k BD (1080) specifications, then here you go: https://mega.nz/file/ulwygYZJ#hrTKpEFVvsG0QXJQHT5b77bTP10RV45F8Ab1FkSeQIo
