@a1anne While you are correct and technically the name should be Radon, it was changed to Rodan for English speaking markets to avoid confusion with the element Radon. Toho themselves later on trademarked the name Rodan making it the official english name
Also Radon is a based on Pteranodon, and it's names spelling also corresponds to Ladon (which is a a dragon-like monster represented in Greek Mythology) not radio
no Gallyion, in the episode 2 it is well explained that it was a short for ‘Radio’ and ‘Onpa’ (音波) -> radiophonic sound wave, we can hear it in the scene where it's like the crowds and journalist talking.
