Please replace this with the previous v1 and v2 especially if you intend to share it with others. Looked through all files (again) and edited out all uuid's along with time stamps except the year that should do it unless publishers decide to piss off their buyers by watermarking straight unto the illustrations. No issues tho tested only on SumatraPDF.
**Preventative measures** For others sharing their premiums and normies after killing DRM
Doing it manually > unhide file extensions > change .epub to .zip and unzip > look through each file for the "name" (usually just the copyright.xhtml), change the uuid (may be in all files) ensure they match subsequent files if they share the same uuid > via CTRL + F> edit it out and zip it and change file extension back to .epub.
think he removed/edited the pub-id as per our discussion, v2 only removed the username afterall. Though according to the description, he seems to have changed all uuids and timestamps as well.
Content wise, it's the same as v1 and v2. If you're not intending to share those copies you downloaded earlier, then you don't necessarily have to download v3 (since v3 supposedly removes the identifiers that points back to the purchaser)
That said, i didn't check his copy so i'm not sure if his edit will affect the readability with some epub readers. Best to try it yourself and see if it works for your reader.
Why didn't you just edit the bonus chapters into danke-empire's release using an epub editor like in Calibre? That wouldn't have any of your watermarks on it and probably much easier than trying to track down every single uuid.
I myself don't know how is this that difficult, since a simple md5 points to two simple differences easily avoidable with windows compressor and notepad in one minute, but oh, well...
@PianoPenguin Did you even read the description? How did you come to the conclusion that watermarks were added? They're the same as v2 and I'm sure danke will just whine like he did over at my page if that was done. I asked this at v2, I got 2 light novel fan translation I'm working on do you want to work on it since you make it sound you know what you are talking about?
@economat heck they can make it easier on themselves and download anime checker http://animechecker.sourceforge.net if they got both versions.
@noZA_ My understanding is that the reason there is a v3 is because they needed to delete some identifying watermarks that were in v1 and v2 which the publisher added because the premiums are DRM-free so they need a precaution of some kind. Seems like they were doing trial and error to figure out where the watermarks were and there's no guarantee they caught all of them even in v3. I thought that just copying and pasting the actual bonus content (the text of the bonus chapters) into someone else's release would guarantee no identifying marks are present. And even if danke whines what can he do about it? Just give him full credit.
You're not wrong with that approach, it can work, yes. But you'd just be solving the issue with this particular release isn't it? Future release wouldn't benefit from this approach at all. What to do if danke has yet to release his epub? By learning the way to do it properly, we can apply it to all future releases, until something changes at least.
And i don't think the "if he whines, let him be" attitude is helpful to the community at all. That's how you piss off uploaders and make them leave the scene
@Minion12 Yeah ok ,that's true and understandable.
BTW apparently the guy who runs J-Novel Club has said that if premium epub sharing becomes too widespread the publishers may get upset and no longer allow them to release without DRM even with watermarks. Can't source it as it's allegedly something he said in the J-Novel discord but that's out there. DRM would be expensive for them to implement because they would have to license it from someone like Adobe, according to something he said in an AMA on /r/lightnovels on Reddit.
Dunno how seriously to take it because are the Japanese publishers really going to check how widespread it is, and how would they even measure that? Plus other DRM like Amazon and Kobo are trivial to break anyway. Maybe he'll just change the watermarking method.
The easiest way they can measure it is through sales numbers i suppose? I believe he will change the watermarking method regardless, some time down the line, just to change things up from time to time.
data is just unorganized info. He needs to makes sense out of it, through correlation and other stuff. One approach is to measure the impact on sales when a premium copy was shared early on as compared to later. I'm sure he has a general figure of how many copies of each volume would sell by now, using historical data over the past few months and releases. Sam reddits, i'm sure he checks around these channels for his stuff as well, not that he can do anything about it but knowing allows him to better understand how the situation out here is currently. If piracy is too rampant and hurts sales too significantly, he has to take an active approach to keep modifying his watermarks/drm efforts, which takes a lot of time/effort/money and is honestly not worth it. His time is better spent focusing on improving his business/brand.
There will always be piracy, like the music industry, film, even real life products (knock-offs/replicas). And there are generally 3 kinds of people. Those willing to spend, maybe will spend, and won't ever spend. It's always about enticing the first two groups primarily, and then sparing some effort to change/convert the third group.
@PianoPenguin It's not a watermark then cuz it is not visilble whatsoever through normal reading. The issue with copying pasting is that it isn't so easy as you make it sound. It's similar to creating basic web pages and you have to link one section to another such as chapters in the epubs need to be linked otherwise when you click on it nothing will happen. This is the case with the 2 LN's I'm working on have those links not functioning correctly.
As long as other sharers are notified about the discussion on-going on this page the better so they can take measures as a precaution. danke already has done it and his his very much modified. My guess is some program is used but what program?
