Encoded by NAZOrip ,the smallest version ,the best version.
.
.
.
I would like to explain why we've used 720P resolution especially on this project..
Say the conclusion first ,smaller resolutions performs better.
.
As you all know ,NAZOrip is a group of encoders who wants to achieve a optimal balance between quality and file size. In another word ,we try to reduce file size ,but keep it looks good as well .That's why we've never use resolutions smaller than 1080P.
.
The reason why we prefer using 1080P in most cases is that we believe 1080P can hold more details. Technically ,the higher the resolution ,the higher upper limit of high frequency information we got. As you know ,when you played a 720P video in full-screen mode on a 1080P screen ,you could find a kind of blurring on textures comparing to a original 1080P source ,that's exactly the result of a cutting of high frequency information we've mentioned above.
.
What we want to clarify is ,to someone who is interested in encoding ,1080P may not be the best resolution always.
.
Actually in some extreme cases, for example you if upscaled a 480P DVD source to 1080P ,apparently the amount of effective information won't get larger (same artument; you won't loss any information when you downscale it to 480P in a inverse algorithm),but you will definitely get a larger file at the same CRF. That means ,in this case,1080P resolution contains less effective information than 720P one at the same file size.
.
The example we mentioned above is not some kind of impractical illusion .Actually it's quite common in old animes.
In the old?days(such as Spice&Wolf was made 9 years ago ,other typical examples such as DVD and BD of “ひぐらしのなく顷に” ), digital level of drawing could not support original 1080P resolution , almost all Blue-ray disk we got was made by upscaling .Higher digital level brings higher drwaing precision nowadays, and that makes BDs usually contains more information (visually , we found that lines become thinner).
.
BUT , no matter how high the original drawing precision we've got . For efficiency reasons ,resize always is unavoidable. (According to arguments we've mentioned above ,every time you downscaling ,you lose some effective information; every time you upscaling ,you get some more meaningless information)
SO ,even though the latest BDs are not perfectly 100% original 1080P .In a sense, we can treat them as old animes.
.
With so much being said, what we would like to make it clear is that for every anime(Specific to every scene) , there's always a sweet spot of resolution(approximately around original drawing resolution). In this resolution ,we won't loss any effective information ,but got the smallest file size ,so that we can assign more bitrates for keeping more details in encoding.(Ignoring different parts in one scene have different drawing resolution ,just regard them as something unitary generally) The sweet spot could be 990P(90%),900P(80%) or other.
Our group members have made lots of comparison (among same file size videos in different resolutions
) ,supplemented with a full reference metric(we chose FSIMc ,a advanced image quality assessment index ).All the results support our argument.
.
However, not hard to imagine how weird it is if we had made a rip version with a resolution of 1728:990 , since 1080P is already a decent resolution. That's why we usually prefer 1080P before .But we decided to use 720P in this case in a consideration of efficiency.
.
.
.
.
Back to treatment of this anime.
We've used classified 4 solution-level as usual ;
Made targeted treatment for strong bandings, ringing and a little bit aliasing in original Blue-ray disks.
Of course with denoising ,our specialty.
.
It finally turns out that you could hardly tell the difference between the two version in most scene ,and that make us satisfied.
