I originally tried using the R1 Platinum discs, but after downloading the R2J Renewal version, I see the encoding really is that much better. Still, the 2003 Renewal project is a joke compared to any modern restoration, with aliasing all over the place. This release attempts to produce a pragmatic, high quality raw that reduces much of the aliasing in the original source, cleans up some of the ringing and edge enhancement, and gives a very light grain reduction to keep compression to sane levels while providing the original AC3 audio. Evangelion is a somewhat difficult show to sub due to its large number of one-frame-long subtitles and sign subs that I simply don't have the patience to properly deal with. That said, I wanted to provide a good encode that dealt with a few of the problems inherent to the DVD source, for others to use and remux with. I didn't want to tag this as an EG release because as far as I'm concerned, this is more of a raw release.
