Bleach follows the adventures of Ichigo Kurosaki after he obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper (死神, Shinigami?, literally, "Death God") —a death personification similar to the Grim Reaper—from another Soul Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki. His newfound powers force him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife. Bleach has been serialized in the Japanese manga anthology Weekly Shōnen Jump since August 2001, and has been collected into 48 tankōbon volumes as of December 2010\[update\]. Soul Reapers Ikkaku Madarame, Yumichika Ayasegawa, Izuru Kira, and Shūhei Hisagi each take one pillar, and after defeating the hollows with ease, are matched up against Choe Neng Poww, Charlotte Cuuhlhourne, Avirama Redder, and Findor Carias, four of Barragan's six Fraccion.
