[Video comparison by scav.](https://slow.pics/c/JxuspG5W) ### Audio Scav's notes on his AMZN WEB-DL JP track v3 sync: >Timing is completely redone and sticks to the Blu-ray track timing closely. There are still some timing differences due to speed fluctuations in the audio transfer. I tried to avoid speed corrections, but in 2 scenes it was unavoidable (00:46:17 - 00:49:42 and 01:00:55 - 01:02:12). I included both the Discotek DVD and the 1999 JP LD versions of the Isolated Score track due to their slightly different mixes. Also included both the BMS and Digiview versions of the AITV dub, as each has its pros and cons. Chorake's video-based BMS sync varied from the audio-based Digiview sync enough to warrant its own separately timed dubtitles. The "unrestored" version of the WEB-DL JP track doesn't have Krycek's buzz and hiss cleanup filtering. [Also has a prominent CRT noise spike at 15.7 kHz](https://i.slow.pics/KnaVmx3r.webp), which could be annoying if you're sensitive to that frequency. * **1990 JP LD**: Somewhat better than the 1985 LD, but still muffled compared to the JP DVD and the WEB-DL. * **1999 JP LD**: Same as the 1990 JP LD. * **2002 JP DVD**: Much better than the LDs and probably from the same master as the WEB-DL, [but has heavier low- and high-end filtering than Krycek's already solid WEB-DL cleanup.](https://slow.pics/c/kZ8KQ6YS) (384 kbps) * **2006 US DVD (Discotek)**: Probably from the same master as the WEB-DL, but the highs are muffled by excessive filtering. Ultimately comparable to or slightly better than the '90s JP LDs. (192 kbps) * **AMZN WEB-DL**: Possibly a flat transfer of a magnetic master. Sounds clear and seems to preserve the most lows and highs. Had some prominent buzz and hiss, which Krycek carefully cleaned up. (224 kbps) * **2020 JP BD**: Harsher and less detailed. Likely sourced from an optical master. * **2023 US BD**: Same as the 2020 JP BD. #### English Mono/Dual-Mono * **2006 US DVD (Digiview)**: The least muffled, but has crackling artifacts throughout (a bit easier on the ears after Krycek's cleanup). The lower mids and lows are less prominent. (256 kbps) * **2006 US DVD (Braun Media Services)**: [Slightly more dynamic than the Digiview DVD](https://slow.pics/c/heDHO2ef) and doesn't have artifacts, but is more muffled. Krycek cleaned the CRT noise spike and excess buzz. (448 kbps) * **2006 US DVD (Discotek)**: Similar to the BMS DVD, except for a very noticeable ~8.5 dB channel imbalance during the first 47 minutes and a steeper roll-off at ~12 kHz. (192 kbps) * **2023 US BD**: Like the Discotek DVD but with additional cleanup filtering and [brightening EQ.](https://slow.pics/c/VQcqGzHS) The filtering is so strong that it removes details, such as rain sounds and the crackle of a fire. Also has a ~3.5 dB channel imbalance in the same section as the Discotek DVD. Could be a lossy-to-lossless conversion, [as the spectrogram is very similar to the Discotek DVD.](https://slow.pics/c/CwigPpxT) #### Isolated Score Mono/Dual-Mono * **1999 JP LD**: Interestingly, the song at 19:40 is ~13 dB quieter on this than on the DVDs and seems to have been sourced from an M&E track on all three releases. Also, on this LD version, the song at 39:12 still has the midpoint fade-down from the main JP mix that's meant to make room for dialogue, and the song at 46:18 is missing the humming vocals. Had a strong CRT noise spike, along with some crackles and buzz, but Krycek again mitigated them nicely. * **2002 JP DVD**: Similar to the LD, except for some [noise reduction or EQ above ~8 kHz and slightly stronger bass.](https://slow.pics/c/UXP9hSa1) (384 kbps) * **2006 US DVD (Discotek)**: Pretty much the JP DVD without the high-end NR/EQ. The opening song sounds slightly more noticeably brighter. (192 kbps) ### Izzybell on the AITV dub The English dub of 1969's Puss 'n Boots has been a preservational black hole since its inception. The dub was produced in 1971 by American International's TV division for use in syndication (specifically AITV's "Children's Showtime" package) and saw moderate airings for a while, and despite the fact that the dub was made for TV, it received various limited theatrical showings over the years. The first home media release of the dub would be in 1982 and was based off the 16mm reels used to make the broadcast master. In 1985, Media Home Entertainment (in collaboration with Orion) would put the dub out again on VHS using a 35mm composite of the dub. Hi-Tops would use the same master for its VHS in the 90s. In the DVD age, Discotek put out the film using audio sourced from an unknown source but highly likely from one of the retail tapes. This same audio would make it onto the 2023 Blu-Ray release. Everything after the Vestron release has used some sort of extreme noise reduction. Discotek's is the worst offender, as it has a bad channel imbalance, making the dub practically unlistenable. However, there are two sources I haven't mentioned yet, as they are grey market releases, those being the 2006 Digiview and BMS DVDs. The Digiview DVD is a capture of the Vestron release (complete with VCR tracking text displaying), and the BMS DVD is seemingly from a video master for the Orion tape. Digiview was the first one synced as I had concluded after checking every source that it had the least amount of NR. It required an almost line-by-line sync due to some issues unknown to us. I also had to patch certain sections with the BMS DVD due to the fact that the Digiview DVD had various glitches and dropouts. Krycek7o2 graciously cleaned the audio for us, fixing the worst of the noise. The reason we went with the Digiview bootleg DVD and not our own cap of the Vestron tape is that while we did get a copy of it during the original ProjectPuss, the tape was aging poorly and sounded worse overall than the DVD. The BMS DVD was found on a whim by SomeRando and synced last. While I still maintain Digiview is the best-sounding source, BMS does have less VHS hissing artifacts thanks to being sourced from a master tape (still suffers from the heavy NR). In any case, this dub has had it rough in terms of being preserved, and while the copies we currently have aren't 100% perfect, they're miles better than whatever is on the Discotek release, and I am glad to have contributed. ### Subtitles I OCR'd the subtitles from the 2023 Discotek US BD, styled and fully retimed the dialogue and songs, typeset the signs, fixed some errors, and added some missing lines.
