Thanks for the release, but it’s very bit starved, and the degrain filter barely feels like it did anything. All in all, not a very good encode. Moreover, couldn’t you have taken 5 minutes to make a signs sub for the English dub using WrathMonth’s script? Not that you bothered to fix it for the BD either for anyone watching it subbed anyway. They're all minor mistakes born from TV-BD changes, but that could've been easily fixed had you only briefly looked at things once.

Do you have a timestamp that looked bit starved? I intentionally did very limited degraining to preserve detail, and even with that the metrics showed I could get great efficiency. I always do some degraining and add fgs. Usually don't touch subtitles aside from style edits.

Sorry if I sounded too harsh. I won’t claim to know anything about encoding, I don’t, and it’s not easily noticeable because of the grain (and there’s quite a bit of it, which I personally believe hurts the encode more than does it any good), but you can still see some compression artifacts here and there, specially in moments when the bit rate spikes (not that there’s that many scenes like that). I remember noticing it when I was fixing the sign for episode 10’s title around the kanji. I’m not sure if this is a good enough example, but I took this shot from episode 3 @ 19:57 on mpv, too: https://cdn.imgpile.com/f/x6EnbM5.jpg As for the subs, it really just takes a few clicks to select and delete the dialogue to make a signs track to go along with the dub. It took me less than 5 minutes to do it for all 12 episodes. Also, I don’t know why you butchered Sentai’s own typesetting, but the way it is in this release, it’s simply unusable, because it literally crops outside the screen, so you can’t even read some of them.

These are meant to be minis. To avoid these artifacts in scenes like that would require increasing the encoding time several fold to score every frame or significantly lowering maximum crf values losing efficiency. I think you're pixel peeping. I am working on improving my fgs methods. Some people really dislike photon noise, but fgs is a useful tool for improving efficiency. It costs nothing for filesize and you can disable it in your player. Like I said before, manually editing subtitle tracks is something I loathe to do. Unfortunately for this release availability of subtitle sources was worse than it is these days. I think the tracks with issue are from HIDI and ADN? Unfortunately HIDI/ADN or Erai from this season either used a single stylename (Default) or used really ambiguous style names (Q0, Q1, Q2) which aren't consistent episode to episode so I would need to manually review and edit every single track, every episode. It's usually not an issue. I started editing subtitle styles because in the last year more streaming services stopped typesetting entirely while actually becoming more consistent with stylenames. Many people complain if I leave them untouched entirely, but edits based on stylenames can be done with automated scripting. If you can point me to groups making quality subtitles in different languages, I'd be happy to use them in the future.

Maybe you're right and I'm just nitpicking, but anime is made of static frames half the time, which are easy enough to encode. If you can't make the parts that matter the most look good, then *when* are you going to make it look good? For all the details that you wanted to preserve with that weak-ass degrain, at lot of it still seemed to have been lost. From that shot alone, even some parts seem to have a bit of haloing. But when you're watching with glasses that seemed to have been covered in sand, everything else just feels like a minor inconvenience by comparison. That said, this show seem like it'd be a pain to encode either way, it's full of sharp lines, but I'm not sure if an aliasing filter would've made it look any better. Really, I don't think anyone's gonna blame you if you lower the CRF a little. Even the audio feels like a crime to encode, given how awful Sentai's masters usually are. As for the subs, you linked VARYG's in the description, so you could've just used them as-is. Why change the style if you're not going to check how it's gonna affect the subs afterwards? If you hate something, maybe ask for help instead of doing a half-assed job, or learn how to do things in a less hateful way. It's OK if you don't know how to typeset, but you can't be completely clueless either if you're going to mess with it. You already went out of your way to make your own release, of which I'm grateful, so you might as well do a good job of it, or at least the best you can, don't you think? But if you can't even check the quality of your own work, then it's hard to be grateful, because it doesn't feel like you doing it for your audience, perhaps not even for yourself, and at that point, why bother, then? If nothing else, you should only put out a release that you're happy with and proud of, not one that will please everyone, and if you're genuinely happy with this, then I have nothing else to add.

There are several sources linked but this series aired before Erai started listing which webstream sources they use so I'm not entirely sure who the French and Italian subtitles are from originally. I explained in detail what happened to the subtitles, and why I don't leave them as is. You said I should ask for help. Do you know anyone willing to do that? I asked you earlier about suggestions for other fansub groups.

I'll be honest, I don't care about languages I don't speak well. My knowledge of French and Italian is just good enough so I won't get lost if I ever need to use them, and unless you speak either of those languages, I don't see why you should care, either. I've only ever been talking about the English subs of your release. Sentai is the one that made the English translation, so regardless of the source, you're almost certainly using their sub. But like I said, even if you don't want to use VARYG's as-is, you could've just muxed the ones that came with the BD. I was hoping to see the OP and the ED translated since it was a BD release, but not even that. I'm all for cutting corners myself, but what I *don't* do is think I can improve something I know nothing about. I have no idea what kind of help you're seeking, so I can't even offer mine without knowing what I could do for you.

Those subtitles are PGS, they're huge and yellow. Also most of the episodes the English forced track is perfectly legible. Episode 01 seems to be the only one cut off, and it's actually because they were missed by the scripting. My mistake. I think your characterization is disingenuous. You're calling it a "half-assed job" over literally 2 lines.

So you won't OCR them, you won't use VARYG's (which are basically the same as those PGS by the way) as-is as an easy solution for a readable track to go alongside the English dub, you won't make one yourself from WrathMonth's script, you won't fix said script for the BD, either (not that it needs that much fixing, but still), and if you restyle them, you can't be bothered to check the results later... Did I get everything right? Do you even want to do anything to improve your release? Well, good luck. The grain is not a total deal-breaker, but still quite unpleasant for me, and for those that care about the English dub, the audio quality is slightly better than any WEB-DL available, so until another encode is released, this one will do. It's not like there are that many signs in this show anyway, so even if you're lazy and don't wanna put one together yourself, you won't miss anything major. None of the other releases seem to have the OP and the ED translated anyway, either. But for everyone else who doesn't care about the dub, just stick to WrathMonth's release anyway.

But maybe you'll make a habit of it going forward? If it'll avoid more slop like this, I would go so far as to consider this a win, even if this release remains an L. Still, I'll admit I didn't bother to check the subs for the other episodes past the first one because, why would I bother? I just took it upon myself to do what you couldn't be bothered to, since it was a solution both easier and faster. I'll apologize again for being too harsh, but I believe all my other points still stand.
