Forgot to mention how fucken based this release is btw. IMPRESS WITH KAIZOKU-FANSUBS STYLED FX FOR MODERN EPISODES LETS GOOOOO
Shoulda used Hatsubs are a base instead of CR ("KiNg oF tHe PiRAtEs" instead of Pirate King blows ass for example) but I ain't complaining cuz this release is nice asf
"King of the Pirates" and "Pirate King" are both perfectly sound and valid translations of "kaizoku-ou". Out of all the many, many, many, many, many, many, many ways the official translation is lacking, THAT one is kinda... barely even a factor?
@Lord_Starfish I disagree. King of the Pirates makes sense if it's "Kaizoku no Ou" and not just "Kaizoku-ou". King of the Pirates also just sounds more pretentious, it's just a big pet peeve of mine. Besides it's not like other anime do this stuff. Black Clover has Wizard King, Bleach has Soul King, Dragon Ball has the Omni King, etc, all in their official translations. Even in One Piece, it's not like the Skypiea sharks, in Japanese "Sora-same" are called "Sharks of the Sky" by FUNimation but instead it's "Sky sharks" like it's supposed to be.
To me, doing King of the Pirates and not keeping that same thing going with other things has always just puzzled me. I really dislike inconsistencies like that.
But I do agree that it's far from the worst thing the official translation does, it's a pet peeve like I said. But I do hate "Berries" for currency, I genuinely think "Shichibukai/Yonkou" should be untranslated as in Japanese dialogue they're used to refer to both the group at large and an individual member, (I would almost argue the same for Tenryuubito) I think attacks should be untranslated, I think "Navy" is complete stubborn idiocy as opposed to Marines because of how "Marine" is plastered everywhere in English, including Marine bases and ships, so it's not as if "Marine" refers to the individuals, because "Navy ship" (or Navy base) is an actual term, but no the sail says Marine, in reference to the ship itself and not the people on it. It's a Marine ship, a ship of "The Marines" and not "tHe NaVy". I hate "Transponder Snail" instead of Den Den Mushi untranslated. "Mosshead" is also not a good translation of Marimo, etc etc.
Now some things I prefer purely for weeb reasons like, I prefer Kairouseki over Sea Prism Stone, so I may also be biased, and I know you may have some given how you did translations for Yibis and such.
The biggest translation pet peeve of mine is that... I see translators overlook the term "Nouryoku-sha" which in One Piece is slang for Devil's Fruit users. Every time, fan or official, it's translated as "Devil Fruit user" which annoys me. I can see doing that when it's "Akuma no Mi no Nouryoku-sha" (Even though that's Devil's Fruit ability user but whatever). But just Nouryoku-sha? Just translate it as ability user! That always irks me smh... it's like nobody cares about nuance.
But whatever TLDR, we can agree to disagree. I had to split this comment into 2.
