The subs are hard to read a lot of times because they have no shadow or have very little of it.

@martinxk These are auto-converted ASS subtitles from the original SRT with stock styling and incomplete header info. Player subtitle style settings are not meant to be used with SSA/ASS. That's there for the basic bitch sub formats. For the player font presets to apply, you'd have to set the player to override subtitles' embedded style info. Which would break, you know, every single Crunchyroll and Hidive rip + fansubs (even if you preferred the dialogue subs that way, it would break signs). In other words, you'd have to turn that setting on for these releases and back off again for basically everything else, instead of the set-it-and-forget-it approach that is the whole point of modern technology.
