The first 26 episodes of Kasumin, sourced from the VCD release of its Singaporean English dub known as Mistin. Each episode contains the original Japanese audio as well as the English dub, and is hardsubbed with (poorly-synced) English dubtitles. The dub localizes various aspects of the original show (changing Kasumin’s name to Mistin and changing “Henamon” to “Morphs”, for example), but otherwise seems relatively faithful all things considered. Furthermore, this release also contains the complete English audio for episode 22, which was previously lost media.
Because these are sourced from VCDs, the video quality is incredibly poor (288p). The Japanese and English audio are both in mono, but they originally played together at the same time when watched on the VCDs (Japanese audio on one side of the track, English audio on the other). I’ve isolated both audio tracks and reattached them to the episodes as their own separate mono tracks.
For the sake of transparency, my process for creating this release was as follows:
-I ripped the VCDs to BIN+CUE with ImgBurn
-I converted the BIN+CUE files to MPEG with vcdgear, which created 4 separate video files per episode (the OP, the episode, the ED, and the next episode preview)
-I isolated the video and audio tracks with LosslessCut
-I converted the MKA audio files to FLAC with ffmpeg
-I isolated the stereo tracks with Audacity into Japanese and English mono tracks, and exported them as FLAC
-I combined the video and audio with MKVtoolnix and exported them as MKV
-I combined all portions of the episodes with MKVtoolnix and exported them as MKV
I attempted to make this release as lossless and accurate to the VCD as possible, though it’s by no means perfect. The OP and ED are in full stereo English on the VCD (the Japanese audio isn’t included), but I had to downsample them to mono in order to combine them with the episodes in MKVtoolnix (it wouldn’t let me combine stereo-tracked MKVs with mono-tracked MKVs). I’ve included the full stereo OP and ED in this release as separate video files. Additionally, while episodes 12 and 13 have no OP on the VCD for some reason, I added the OP to them in this release for the sake of consistency. There’s also a glitch on the next episode preview for episode 15 where the Japanese track plays the Japanese and English audio at the same time. This is a glitch that was present on the VCD, and I left it as is.
I’m saying all this to emphasize that I have next to zero experience with anything related to encoding, and even disregarding the video and audio quality inherent to VCDs, this release is far from perfect. This isn’t meant to be a definitive Kasumin release in any capacity, it’s just my attempt to bring more exposure to one of my favourite anime, and to give people the opportunity to watch the entirety of its first season in English. All this being said, this obviously isn’t meant to be a replacement for naisho’s Kasumin fansub, which uses a vastly superior video source and is probably a much better translation as well.
For anyone more knowledgeable than me who wants to take a crack at making a better Kasumin release sometime in the future (preferably softsubbed and with a better video source), I’ve included the complete, unaltered BIN+CUE files ripped from the VCDs in the Internet Archive upload of this release.
