> i would love to see effort put in to songs is to have the song subtitles in hiragana or katakana.
What fraction of the English speaking anime fanbase can actually read hiragana or katakana? For the overwhelming majority it'd serve no purpose and only take up space on the screen. On the other hand, the English translation serves to offer a translation of what is sung so the reader can understand the song while the romaji serves to allow the viewer to singalong if they desire (which is the purpose of karaoke to begin with).
Having said all that, I personally remove any kanji for OP & ED if the subtitle sources I was using included them for that very reason, as is the case with Rurouni Kenshin this season. Though I suppose most of the rest of the team usually doesn't bother. The overwhelming majority of fansubs these days don't even bother adding romaji either, opting to only include a singable English translation.
Gotta say I do favor the classic Romanji and English subtitles, only English is lacking for me.
Just feels way more complete with Romanji and that is how I felt about it ever since I saw SS-Eclipse subs for Zero no Tsukaima, many years ago.
Many are watching anime on 1080p screens nowadays, two subs for OPED won't use that much space.
Props to DKILLER for not giving up on this anime after S2.
A bit late to the discussion, but you're talking about a show that was released nearly twenty years ago. In those nearly two decades, streaming services have managed to almost completely eliminate the fansubbing scene, and nowadays the majority of the animes any given person watches come from an official source of sorts. If said source translates the opening and endings songs, I already consider that a win and a privilege. Personally, I hate when subs clutter the screen, no matter how large it is, that being the reason why I choose dubs over subs whenever possible. I'll admit having the lyrics in romanji to singalong can be nice, but more than half of the shows I watch aren't engaging enough to get me into a singing mood, so I'm more than happy just having a good translation for the songs, which honestly is what matters the most to me.
