The 4K BDs have interesting additional audio tracks, but the state of the video on them is pretty dreadful due to overdone DNR. The 2012 UK BD uses the same piss-poor interlaced master the 2008 JP BD used, so it and the '08 JP BD can practically be discarded from the conversation as well. ### Audio See the tracklist down in the comments for all the tracks included in this upload. There are a few Japanese audio mixes available for Cagliostro, but I've decided to only include the original theatrical Mono mix because it's the only one that sounds any good, and it's, well, the film's originally intended mix. The 2.0 and 7.1 remixes on the 4K BDs can be seen as attempts at squeezing out multichannel mixes from a mostly Mono source, as the music is apparently the sole notable element recorded initially in Stereo. Furthermore, the remixes are also marred by unfortunate mastering decisions, with the upper mids and highs on both having been gutted by [harsh noise reduction/EQ from 2.5 kHz onwards](https://slow.pics/c/PoS3unlc). As a result, they have an unnaturally muffled sound and, at parts, worse overall clarity than the Mono mix despite their additional channels. This is all probably most evident in the dialogue, which sounds clear on the Mono mix and veiled on the remixes. And I suppose another plus about omitting the remixes is that the final file size is ~3.3 GB smaller without them. If you're wondering about this "audio noise reduction" stuff, I recommend reading [blah-ray's blog post](https://blah-ray.blogspot.com/p/what-isthis-revisited-my.html) about how excessive noise reduction on older audio tracks can be detrimental to their fidelity. All modern releases of this film have a clipped and slightly filtered JP Mono track, so I have to give a big thanks to Internet Archive user aiming4theaces for originally uploading the [1995 JP LD](https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/15261) JP Mono audio, which ended up being the best non-clipped version of the mix and was hence used here. It plays great after some sync edits that these LD tracks tend to require. As for the other tracks, I took them from the 2021 Discotek US 4K BD save for three "isolated" tracks it was missing and the Streamline dub as it was clipped on Discotek's release. Speaking of the Streamline dub, you might've noticed it appears twice in the tracklist. I decided to include the LD version of the dub along with the BD version because I found the mastering differences between them intriguing and thought the LD version was unique enough to be a worthwhile addition to the list (and I didn't want a track that CrashOveride graciously provided to go unused). This LD Streamline dub was also the [most challenging one to sync](https://i.imgur.com/Kd9BawY.png) of the 10 tracks, so giant props to Krycek7o2 for handling it. The Manga dub track and its "family-friendly" edited version are the same, except the edited one doesn’t have the profanity that the original added in places where there was none in the Japanese track. The family version's editing was done by Discotek's Reed Nelson using the original stems, and it is decent for the most part, but you can sometimes tell things were cut up or copy/pasted if you're paying closer attention. None of the 31 edits should stick out in any experience-ruining way, however. The aforementioned “isolated” ones are what you’d think: tracks with only one or two separated elements like SFX or music in the mix. The Isolated Music 1.0 from the [1993 JP LD](https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/16539) has the music in Mono and sounds like the full JP Mono mix. The 2.0 version from the Discotek 4K BD has the same music but is mastered differently and is obviously in Stereo, so it doesn’t exactly sound like how the music does in the film (probably closer to a CD or the Manga dub). Then the Isolated SFX 1.0 from the '93 JP LD of course has just the SFX and nothing else. If you want music *and* SFX but no dialogue, there's the Isolated M&E 1.0 from the [1997 JP LD](https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/16474). And finally, the last track is an audio commentary by ["avid Lupin III fan"](https://i.imgur.com/WbrahnB.png) Reed Nelson. Specifically, it's his 2019 version of the commentary that has some tweaks and corrections added to the first version he recorded in 2014. While I didn’t spot any prominent glitches or such on the tracks, I did fix one pop sound on the Isolated SFX 1.0 track and one short crackle during the intro song on the 2012 UK BD Streamline 1.0 dub track. A bigger crackle on the '97 LD Streamline track was also fixed by Krycek7o2. Links to the complete audio comparisons are in the "Comparisons" section down below if you are interested. I'll gladly check it out and add it to the comparisons or the list below. #### Japanese Mono * **1993 JP LD**: An analog version of the '95 digital track, so has some additional noise but sounds great nonetheless. No complaints. * **1995 JP LD**: Sounds clear and lively, with no clipping or any apparent noise reduction issues. The best version of this track I've heard thus far. * **2001 JP DVD**: Similar to the LDs but has quite major [clipping](https://slow.pics/c/k74d3ULg) throughout the film and some [noise reduction/EQ](https://slow.pics/c/eD5aOLOV) (2-4 dB) between 6 kHz - 13 kHz. Also has a slight bass increase between 25 Hz - 200 Hz compared to the LDs. (384 kbps) * **2008 JP BD**: A lossless version of the 2001 JP DVD. * **2012 UK BD**: Same as the 2008 JP BD. * **2014 JP BD**: Same as the 2008 JP BD. * **2015 US BD**: Same as the 2008 JP BD. * **2019 JP 4K BD**: Same as the 2008 JP BD. * **2021 US 4K BD**: Same as the 2008 JP BD. #### English (Streamline) Mono * **1997 JP LD**: Has a different, slightly drier sound from the DVD and BDs, [with enough extra low end](https://slow.pics/c/jMOk1gOx) (4-7 dB) to make this the bassiest track for this film by far. Also has less variation in volume between quiet and loud moments than the JP DVD, so not quite as dynamic (FWIW, still 3 dB more dynamic range than on the clipped US BD versions). * **2001 JP DVD**: Save for the low bitrate, sounds fine. No clipping or any huge NR issues. The mastering is much less bass-heavy than the 1997 JP LD and thus sounds closer to the JP Mono mix. (192 kbps) * **2012 UK BD**: A lossless version of the 2001 JP DVD. * **2015 US BD**: Has the same mastering as the JP DVD but also has [clipping](https://slow.pics/c/ZSMjrNaQ) throughout. Strangely, there's a sudden, 2-second-long spike in volume @ 44min9s that reaches way beyond the clipping point of the rest of the track. It doesn't seem to be a decoding error on my part since it's present on the 2021 4K BD track as well, which leads me to believe something went wrong during the production of the release (in addition to the clipping). * **2021 US 4K BD**: Same as the 2015 US BD. ### Subtitles For the main subtitles, I OCR'd Shoko Ohno's revised translation from the Discotek 4K BD and fully retimed it, styled the dialogue, did some typesetting for the signs and songs, and put italics on a couple more lines that were missing them. Should be a decent overall improvement over the PGS subs and the existing stuff on nyaa. **CrashOveride's dubtitle notes:** Streamline dubtitles: The Streamline dubtitles were compiled from two main sources: a dubtitle track from the 2001 Ghibli R2J DVD, and the script booklet which came with the 1997 JP LD. Unfortunately, both sources had major issues. The Ghibli DVD had a [dreadful font](https://i.imgur.com/7SH6yvw.png) which caused enormous difficulty upon OCR. Both sources suffer from a lot of typos and lines that are completely different from what's being said throughout. This required a line-by-line check of the entire movie to make sure the subs were actually correct, and to the best of my ability make sure that all lines that could be possibly covered were. Manga dubtitles: The Manga dubtitles were taken from the subtitle translation on the 2007 Manga R1DVD, as it has a lot of lines that are close to or are the same as the dub's script. Unfortunately, a significant amount (my unscientific estimation is 50-65%) of the lines were very different from the dub, and required a line-by-line check of the entire movie, in addition to having to check the entire movie again to find all the new extra lines added in the dub. Thanks must go to hydes for logging the (ridiculously obvious at points) changes that the Family Friendly mix did, as I was absolutely exasperated after finishing the Manga dubtitles.
