### Space Runaway Ideon: Be Invoked
Ideon being an influence for Evangelion is probably common knowledge, but I don't think quite as many people are aware that Kazuya Tsurumaki's FLCL [also has some neat homages](https://i.imgur.com/7bLkkZK.jpg) to Ideon. (pics by [@BlackSeaAMS](https://twitter.com/BlackSeaAMS))
### Video
The video is a raw remux of the 2011 JP BD. I looked into the encodes on here, and none seemed to beat the remux. They tended to muddle the grain, lose texture and background detail, and introduce further compression artifacts a bit too much for my liking. There was also the 2019 US BD as another contender, and I was initially going to have to leave it out from the comparisons due to not having the video at hand, but luckily, NLScavenger provided some [screenshots](https://slow.pics/c/Nj24AzHk) of his copy. His [explanation](https://nyaa.si/view/1557152#com-3) also makes it clear why it retains less detail than the JP BD. To see the differences between the JP BD remux and the various encodes, check out the comparisons linked below.
### Audio
I couldn't get my hands on the JP DVD, and I lack the required hardware for capturing the audio from the [JP LaserDisc](https://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/41550/TCLA-1001/Ideon-The:-A-Contact/Be-Invoked), so I just went with the 2.0 Dual-Mono track on the JP BD (the US BD track is essentially identical). Fortunately, it seems to be in at least decent condition. No clipping or disgusting amounts of noise reduction, though some NR has likely been applied. The tracks on the DVD and LD could be better, but I guess whether they are or not will be left a mystery for the time being.
**3.9.2023 update on the audio:** Still not sure about the JP DVD, but the JP LD has a much worse-sounding optical track.
### Subtitles
I took the US BD subtitles and retimed them, styled the dialogue, tidied up some line breaks, and fixed a couple of small errors I noticed. The retiming felt particularly necessary because, like Tomino's other shows and movies, *Be Invoked* is quite dialogue-heavy and uses very fast-paced cutting for its action scenes. Because of these factors, the occasionally too high CPS coupled with the lines constantly starting and ending a few frames after or before scene changes on the BD subtitles made things a bit difficult to follow.
A good amount of lines were also exceedingly long on the BD subs, with three or four sentences needlessly jammed together at times. I split these and other overly long lines where appropriate as much as possible and joined together a few other quick ones to help readability in those more fast-paced, hectic moments and in cases where the lines would otherwise be on screen for too little time. All things considered, the subs should now be easier to keep up with.
Let me know if you spot any errors, and I'll get to them as soon as possible.
