How exactly did “onna dorei” get translated as “sex slave”?
In the manga scanlations is translated as female slave, in the official italian translation of the manga is female slave (well, the italian counterpart of course).
Now the anime is out and everyone is translating it as sex slave.
Why? The japanese is pretty clear and the fact that a female slave is gonna be used for sexual service is already obvious for the western public, there is 0 need for the translator to make the nuance cleaner (if they so wanted they would have used seidorei).

@ChibiGoku: “onna dorei” does literally mean “female slave”, but the connotation is obvious. It’s clear they mean “sex slaves”. In English, that is what you’d say. Nobody says “male slave” or “female slave” in English. And just “slave” does not actually give the meaning they are obviously using: a female slave used for sex. A sex slave.

@DmonHiro: the connotation that female slaves are used for sex is obvious, you’re right, so there is 0 reason for treating the viewers are idiot.
Also no, they are not the same thing, onna dorei are used as adventurers, maids, second wives, they are not living sex dolls. There’s a clear reason the title is not using seidorei here and it’s made quite clear in the following chapters, translators should translate, not try to guess (wrongly in your case) what the author is implying.
Female slave is also such a non existing concept in english that wikipedia has an entire page about female slavery but what do they know.
