[720p AV1 release available here](https://nyaa.si/view/1518588)
So let me explain a few of my encoding choices here.
I choosed CQ20 because at CQ18 bitrate increased by almost 2x, while grain retention was at best marginally better.
Also my goal was to make this incredible restoration work available to more people at a more reasonable size.
Why not AV1 then ? Well, because for it to have similar grain to the source, it needed almost 10MB/s, which would make it unplayable on most systems. Also to make that work best, the encoding speed needed to be painfully slow. The end result would be even closer to the source than what I'm presenting to you today though, so I'm thinking of IF I'm gonna do it eventually, and HOW can I improve the encode further so that it doesn't need a whooping 10MB/s to keep that grain intact.
And don't ask me for a 4K version, it'd take ages lol
@NekoTrix You should probably link to our v2 instead of the one there since that one has audio problems.
@Saucygdogg Understandable, but when you're working with sources as big as our raw files (this one was 200+GB), then getting it down to 20+ is imo more than generous. Our goal was Blu-ray Remux size after all. The YouTube version looks decent enough and it's about the same size/bitrate as this though, so this re-encode should look similar at least (aside from resolution that is).
@nemurenatta It's now fixed.
The thing is, YouTube compression is notoriously known for sucking quite a lot, introducing banding, removing grain, some blocking behaviour, but of course the fact that you can go up to 4K mitigates some of those issues. Anyway we can't be certain it won't get removed by Nintendo or someone else, when here it's pretty much safe and will benefit users like Saucygdogg who seeks to download a decent quality encode at a much lower size.
Our goals are just different, but that's not an issue. It means it will also attract different people.
I'm extremely grateful for FemboyFilms and there release. I actually have like 30 Tbs in ext HDs but I've filled 'em up with a ridiculous amount of animation. Mostly anime and French animation. That's the only reason I'm going the smaller encode route nowadays and small AV1 encodes and HEVC look damn good is another reason.
Does this release have the audio problems of their v1, or is this release fine? I was waiting to see if it did before committing resources to downloading this. Thanks very much for the work in either case! To the original teams, and to you for making something close to as good at a way more manageable filesize.
I read over the description a few times, and, ironically, where it's included so largely actually made me gloss over it as I was looking at the smaller text assuming the details of such a thing might be included there. Thanks again, and sorry for missing that!
