# Last Exile ![Last Exile](https://cdn-eu.anidb.net/images/main/224016.jpg) **Type:** TV Series, 26 episodes **Year:** 08.04.2003 until 30.09.2003 **Tags:** action, air force, fantasy, military, new, science fiction, seinen, steampunk **Link:** [AniDB](https://anidb.net/a581) Claus Valca is from the world of Prester where he and his long-time friend, Lavie Head live and work as sky couriers. They pilot a van-ship left to Claus by his father. Together they dream of one day making the journey their fathers were never able to complete - fly across the notoriously dangerous stretch of space known as the Grand Stream. One day, after Claus and Lavie agree to shuttle a mysterious girl named Alvis Hamilton to the air-battleship, Silvana, they become involved in a war that shakes their world - Prester, a world where mighty winds and a sea of clouds spread far and wide... --- ### About this release: **Group:** Deus EX Anima [DEXA] **Source:** retail Japanese BluRay box-set **Video:** 720p, HEVC x265 10-bit, CRF14 **Audio:** Japanese, FLAC, 2ch, 16-bit **Subtitle:** English (styled, edited and timed by DEXA using R1, [Ani-Kraze] and other sources - *for more details, see below*), ASS **Chapters:** Yes --- ### Comments about this release: + Continuing with HEVC video encoding + lossless FLAC for audio. HEVC x265 still provides around 30% smaller video stream sizes compared to AVC x264, so using FLAC for audio makes a bit more sense. + 720p for this one because of obvious reasons. + Source definitely has banding issues, so debanding was needed. + The subtitles were created, styled and timed in-house, using various sources, mostly R1, but also a bit of [Ani-Kraze], official sources, various sites and wikis. Let's break this down: 1. **Main episodes** - translation is 99% R1 (provided by [ACX]) and 1% [Ani-Kraze]. Quite a few errors were fixed, and some suspicious parts were compared with [Ani-Kraze] to see which provides a better translation, changing when necessary. However, I can say that R1 is actually pretty good and consistent. [Ani-Kraze] had some great high-quality projects, but Last Exile was among their early projects when the group was fairly young, and the difference is evident. OCRing would have taken ages anyway. Dialogue styled and re-timed in-house. All signs created and styled in-house. 2. **OP, ED and in-episode songs** - created, styled and timed completely in-house, using official sources, various sites and wikis. No fancy karaoke though. 3. **Pilot** - all signs translated and styled in-house. + This release contains all episodes, two creditless openings, one creditless ending and a short Pilot video, available on the last BluRay. + Tested on my usual **Windows 10** setup, but I can also confirm that it's compatible with the **Nvidia Shield Pro** (2019 edition) using **Kodi**. (Note that MX Player had some issues rendering the subtitles correctly.) + **A very personal opinion about this anime and this release**: if I presume [Wonderful Days](https://nyaa.si/view/1104696) to be the "movie" which sparked my interest in anime, then I could definitely call Last Exile as the real confirmation that animes are good and that I'm ready to discover a new world of art and entertainment. Last Exile was my very first proper anime that I watched as an adult and although it's not perfect, it will always hold a very special place in my heart. Definitely one of the best animes made by Gonzo, it has memorable characters (designed by Range Murata), a great steampunk world setting with lots of details, solid animation and a stellar soundtrack + OP/ED. Compared to some other animes, this one was quite popular outside of Japan too. But as the years passed, even though the anime was re-released later on DVDs and on BluRay, I haven't found a proper soft-subbed release with signs and styled songs, which this anime would definitely deserve. After waiting for Godot for years, I gave up and decided to make my own release, and after months of work, this is the end result. It's not perfect, but it was made with lots of love. + Wondering about the sequel *Last Exile: Gin`yoku no Fam*? The 1st was good. Then they released a sequel (Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing), that one sucked.
[Comparison against Zero-Raws](https://slow.pics/c/ehwDPd7T) (getting frames to line up was hard, sorry)
@motbob Which encode would you say is better between the two? From what I'm seeing, Zero-Raws' encodes appear to retain more detail. Also, have you seen UQW's release for this? https://nyaa.si/view/1302499
Sorry, but not sorry to say that, I like your new releases with FLAC. This is a very nice pick, thank you for your work on this series. @DoktorWeiss I would say Zero-Raws' has clearly more details in textures. (Strange, as the episodes are very small.) Instead of UQW's, I would rather compare against Urotsuki's release... (Almost twice the file size, but not as much as UQW.)
I'm glad I decided to rewatch these series in 2022 when your releases came up. Thanks for spending time on this!
Definitively loses a fair amount of detail compared to Zero-Raws' version. Still trying to find Urotsuki's release.
It really depends on how you look at it. Zero Raws' version is definitely bit-starved, and as a result, it has a fair amount of compression artefacts. It also doesn't try to deal with banding problems found on source, which this version solves. As a result, watching Zero-Raws' version on OLED is not a good experience. Not related to video, but this version also has proper styled subtitles, something that was missing in pretty much any prior DVD or BD release.
Mate, no one asked about your telly.
type17_RAIDEN: "Mate, no one asked about your telly." When you write a completely useless negative comment just for the sake of it...
