This release is essentially identical to Sephirotic's release of The End Of Evangelion, with a few notable changes. The video streams have been concatenated into their original theatrical format. The audio stream has been replaced with a 5.1 flac transcode of the BD audio, for maximum bloat. The subtitles have been modified based off of Sephirotic's release of Neon Genesis Evangelion. I edited them to fix what I see as translation errors, awkward dialogue, and poor decisions for release formatting. They were made with the philosophy that subtitles should be accurate both to what is being said, and what is attempting to be conveyed, and that subtitles should be utilitarian. not obstructing or modifying the visuals on screen beyond providing translations for the script, insert music, and signs/titles. With that in mind, I have taken great care to ensure that the dialogue flow is as natural as it ought to be, while maintaining a high degree of literal accuracy. Where Sephirotic had noted (with TL notes), I also attempted to more properly convey the motifs of the movie. Subs for episode 25' and 26' have been concatenated, and the subtitles are timed for a concatenated video stream of Sephirotic's release, which removed the blu-ray added production logos. They can be time shifted by 492 (@24fps) frames to match the blu-ray release. Translators notes have been removed. I have adjusted the timing in some places to better match the lines. There were also minor typesetting changes to make the subtitles more standardized, and less visually punctuated. Seems interesting, but why not get rid of [memes like this](https://files.catbox.moe/pytrgp.png) and splice in commie's far superior ts? [+ the songs are generally pretty gross](https://files.catbox.moe/rkuns4.png); having lyrics cluttering up the screen during scenes is bad (with possible exceptions including OPs, EDs, and symphogear), especially when the song is in english anyways

'erste' isn't a meme. It's what Asuka says. Some EOPs might not get that she says it in German. I suppose leaving that in helps them understand that she's not speaking Japanese for that line. Song titles, I can understand. Maybe I should have added a no-song version. No one mentioned it on /a/ when I was taking suggestions and posting partial work. I can always do a v2 with no karaoke subs. As far as ts, there are two reasons. First, if I remember correctly, Seph did some colour corrections that I wanted to keep. Second, I consider the video format more than adequate. People are going to make better quality and more advanced codec versions eventually. The point is more to have a quality translation to base new releases off of, rather than having the best video quality available. Also I obviously haven't compared. What's so special about commie's ts?

Erste is a total meme, it's a word in a foreign language and therefore should be translated into English. If a less keen viewer misses that it was originally in German, then tough. Including it on the top of the screen is the modern equivalent of a tl note and should be avoided. Same with out of place song subs /a/ is very far from the end-all-be-all of anime correctness and generally shit for advising on anything at all. They still can't decide on Asuka or Rei ![dek](https://files.catbox.moe/2p9mjs.png) Seph did color corrections on the video, not the subs. I have no issues with the video, it's fine for people who are into that sort of thing. Ts means typesetting, and the main goal is to have subs and signs blend in with the original work as seamlessly as possible. [Commie did a much better job on this in general](https://slow.pics/c/AUYwEZ2C) If you didn't compare releases, what made you decide to base yours entirely off of Sephirotic in the first place?

A foreign word that is not translated in the original show, which implies it was meant to be left untranslated, shouldn't necessarily be translated for a new target audience. The intention of the director was to splice in a German word without providing any sort of translation. I didn't see the Japanese closed captions though, they might offer a translation for it. The best idea is probably leaving it without any subs, but if it's actually present (and translated) in the CC, then an english translation is warranted.

Netflix actually has the Japanese closed captions, which include stuff like the sound effects and the music cues and whatnot as well as the dialogue, taken from the home media releases I'd imagine. The best way is either translating it or applying the translation on top of the original word then, just like they did with the CC. I don't think it matters too much, but to be frank i'd rather see what the german word is at the very least. It's kinda hard to understand japanese people trying to speak another language, which is why a subtitle cue is useful.

Interesting that they had CASPER and erste in english for the main line and the japanese equivalents in the secondary line, feels like an odd choice. Closed captions are made for viewers who can't hear audio cues; does netflix not have a normal subtitle track for Japanese audiences?

@arcus I thought you were referring to transport stream. If someone in the future wants to make some great typesetting based off of this, they can. I'm not experienced in typesetting enough to do it myself, and Seph -> Commie isn't a big enough improvement IMO to fix it. If there were another release out there with over the top typesetting like https://i.imgur.com/yJw0tV9.png then maybe I'd redo it based off of that. I haven't been paying attention to recent releases.

Seconding the use of Commie's typesetting. At least based on the comparisons provided, it's definitely the superior one. Disagree with removing 'erste', though. If anything, provide the English translation right above the word as mentioned in another comment above.

Same in Macross DYRL movie at the end, when there's a lot of action and motion going on but I guess another exception is when a character is actually singing. @marshalmeatball "The audio stream has been replaced with a 5.1 flac" - or it could have been 5.1 TrueHD, you didn't want to do the same with the series ? (thus keeping Sephirotic's video)

@golgoth-13 I just checked my BDMV, and both audio tracks for EoE are PCM. the 5.1 track for stream 5 (Episode 25' it looks like) is 1.5GB. in flac it's 1.0 GB. I wouldn't transcode to a nonfree format like TrueHD, but an encoder for that exist in ffmpeg so if anyone needs that for some use case, they can convert it on their own. As I said above, the point of this release is to be a slightly more accurate translation of the movie dialogue to Sephiroth's release in a theatric format. codec and typesetting is to my own taste.

@marshalmeatball Oooh, this is a late reply. ^^ I was not debating about 5.1 FLAC vs 5.1 TrueHD. What you did is good enough, and I cannot agree more to the point of converting to a free format. What I was asking is about the eventuality that you would have done the same with the series, I mean taking the video and associate to whatever FLAC or TrueHD like you've done for the movie. Of course I guess it is a lot more effort, and there are other releases, but doing so for the film, it seemed you like Sephirotic's encode but wanting a better audio (without "going for maximum bloat" as you said, choosing FLAC 16bit instead of 24bit, which is fine) so I was wondering. ^^

I only made this because I had specific complaints about the translation choices Seph made in EoE. I don't have any problems with his NGE release that would necessitate me doing my own release of NGE. If all you want is FLAC audio, there are numerous releases available which you can either take or mux out the audio. I don't have any intentions of doing so myself.
