Thank you for this <3
So what's the difference between these and the wavs that claimed to be lossless? Other than the extension is there anything else different?
@Rockmanexe You can use spectrogram software if you're suspicious with lossless audio files. But it seems that the size for this files is quite similar with the WAV files that IslaWoof uploaded. Not sure what level of FLAC that this files is use to convert with.
@Rockmanexe By the size of this FLAC release I recommend you download the WAV one.
@faizikari @peluche-nerv Ah should've reframed what I said. I thought only FLACs were lossless now after looking it up I realize I was wrong. Sorry, I'm new when it comes to audio formats. Have downloaded both however the WAVs have a bunch of question marks in the title section in windows explorer as opposed to these ones or the earlier releases. Just was wondering which one was better to keep for now I'm gonna keep both.
use CUETools verify people http://db.cuetools.net/?tocid=UwTVXC1aoxZzkOY8ypPf70RPbuU-
These look to be 16 bit 44.1kHz level 0 flac rather than hi-res, in other words hardly any compression compared to uncompressed lossless. No idea why the OP decided to do this. Only advantage of this over the wav one is that this comes tagged with metadata already. You could just reencode the entire thing yourself to level 8 flac to actually achieve meaningful file size reduction, or wait for someone else's upload.
@Rockmanaxe the question marks are a Windows problem not properly rendering Japanese characters (which I have used for a couple titles and Shiro's name), if you install a font they will render properly; and why wav and not flac it's because while I was I converting the CD files FLAC turned out not to be fully lossless (it was 962kbps) because of how the CODEC works while WAV was the usual (ideal) 1411kbps therefore I uploaded it in WAV rather than converting WAV to FLAC since it's a pretty useless process (iirc King Studios themselves use WAV). Both WAV and FLAC are lossless quality, I'm honestly not even sure why this torrent is a thing other than file size, and @Kurohayabusa the WAV I made already comes with metadata. Hope this clarifies a little, and I don't know how this guy got the FLAC but I'm assuming they used my torrent and converted it, since I don't think it's possible for them to get a 1411kbps from the CDs?
@IslaWoof The WAV from CD is CBR, that's why it's constant 1411kbps, while FLAC is VBR, it will go up when it needed to. Most of the files are instrumental, so FLAC only use not more bitrate that it intended to. Try check other FLAC files from different genre, mostly rock and metal use more bitrate(1000kbps). WAV to FLAC is lossless to lossless conversion, so no quality loss there. Don't worry, there's no quality degradation, all people prefer FLAC and use it for years and there's no issue with it.
@IslaWoof No, FLAC is fully lossless, WAV (as well as AIFF) is just the original PCM data that you're not supposed to even apply the compression term "lossless" to. You don't need any of the extra silence that bogs down uncompressed PCM and if you do phase inversion between lossless compression files and uncompressed PCM you get only silence as opposed to lossy files. VBR gives you the actual, proper bit rate as not everything on a CD is actually 1411 kbps, especially when it comes to an OST where there's both big and small tracks (and even in the big tracks the source of high bit rates is primarily HF instruments like the cymbal which explains what @faizikari said about why Rock/Metal, which uses said instrument the whole track through most of the time, is typically at such high bit rates).
