At first, the monsters that Kouji fights & the attacks from Dr. Hell are goofy and do little other than large scale property damage. But as time goes on, the world darkens around Kouji. It is after the turning point, where Kouji finally kills Dr. Hell (or so he believes) when things change with the arrival of the Mycenae Empire. Kouji finds himself & his grandfather's Mazinger Z (the strongest super robot in the world) powerless to defeat the invaders, where Kouji's adopted brother/uncle (depending on continuity) shows up in an even stronger Mazinger, Great Mazinger. Tetsuya & Great Mazinger go on to save the daw from the Mycenae by basically killing Hades, overcoming all evil. Is this starting to sound familiar, at least a little bit? Does Tetsuya remind you of anyone in Umineko? Anyways, after the day is finally saved again, Dr. Hell returns & completely decimates Great Mazinger. Dr. Hell has become embodied with the powers of Hell itself. Kouji knows it is time to return as he is equipped with a new Mazinger in order to fight evil itself. But not Kouji knows that the power of Mazinger allows one to become the greatest of gods or the greatest of demons. And Kouji typically falls to his inner darkness, killing him, allowing evil to win out in the end. Kouji is cast out, not into an afterlife, but a sort of meta-world (or he is reborn) where he can look back upon his decisions & mistakes. What was it that he needed to know? That Mazinger can make one greater than the gods or allow one to become the darkest of evils (Bernkastel reference). What did Kouji promise? Was it to his grandfather? What was the promise the Kouji made that one day back on that island? If he remembered, would fate be different? Could he have avoided this tragedy?")
