How to play :
AV1 is a fairly new format and therefore has still playback and performance issues, especially with 10bit content.
It’s suggested to use MPV (https://mpv.io/) or the latest VLC Nightly (https://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win64/).
If VLC is lagging: Try increasing the “File caching (ms)” to e.g. 1000ms.
Mobile Devices or weaker CPU’s may have not enough power to play these files.
Performance improvements from the decoder are still work in progress.

Synopsis:

For centuries, humanity has been hunted by giant, mysterious predators known as the Titans. Three mighty walls—Wall Maria, Rose, and Sheena—provided peace and protection for humanity for over a hundred years. That peace, however, was shattered when the Colossus Titan and Armored Titan appeared and destroyed the outermost wall, Wall Maria. Forced to retreat behind Wall Rose, humanity waited with bated breath for the Titans to reappear and destroy their safe haven once more.

In Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2, Eren Yeager and others of the 104th Training Corps have just begun to become full members of the Survey Corps. As they ready themselves to face the Titans once again, their preparations are interrupted by the invasion of Wall Rose—but all is not as it seems as more mysteries are unraveled. As the Survey Corps races to save the wall, they uncover more about the invading Titans and the dark secrets of their own members.

Thank you! It’s quite interesting to me to see how these releases, and AV1 playback are progressing. I was wondering: Do you encode using dark boost to avoid artifacts in dark scenes?

@SeatownSin I’m assuming you’re talking about Av1an? I was the one to suggest adding that feature since we had serious issues with Violet Evergarden. AV1 tends to loose detail in those dark scenes rather than artifacting. It has gotten a bit better now, and I was informed that aq mode of 1 helps with the dark scenes, though efficiency drops by quite a lot. So no, I didn’t use darkscene boost in this release because it wasn’t really needed. And I don’t use Av1an because there were serious issues integrating it into my workflow. However I will use it for movie releases.

@Montec FYI in case it can be of utility
By disabling CDEF filter, 10bit decoding speed increases by 2.3 times. Disabling CDEF benefits animation and damage film encoding

@hourwatch I know :D
This research was done by HAV1T and the rest of the community, the season 3 (which is almost done) has CDEF disabled, so expect to see great playback! Minimum CPU requirement is 2nd Gen i5.
