Figure 17 was animated at OLM, Inc. and directed by Naohito Takahashi (Steel Angel Kurumi, Berserk). The series featured character designs by Yuriko Chiba and music by Toshihiko Takamizawa (of the rock band The Alfee). The series is unusual due to it having 46 minute (1 hour TV) episodes.
Tsubasa Shiina is a 10-year-old girl who recently moved to Hokkaido with her father. In school, she is very quiet and shy with her classmates. Then one night, she witnesses a UFO crash in the forest behind her home. She rushes to the scene and finds the pilot, codenamed “D.D.”, badly injured. Also at the scene is a Maguar, a hideous alien that hatched aboard D.D.'s spaceship. The attacking Maguar is close to taking Tsubasa’s life, when an alien lifeform fuses with her body to form the Riberus battle armor, Figure 17. Together they destroy the alien threat. The Riberus then unexpectedly morphs into an identical twin of Tsubasa. As time passes, Tsubasa becomes more open to everyone around her. It’s thanks to her new twin sister Hikaru. However, with Maguar eggs scattered all over Hokkaido, Tsubasa and Hikaru’s ability to form Figure 17 is needed. The plot is driven as much by Tsubasa learning from Hikaru and her experiences with her new sister at school, as it is by the fights with the Maguar.

Notes: Opening Bandai and Credits were muxed out in favor of clean openings. I left credits on Eps 5,13 only. I added the English opening title and retimed subs accordingly. Some of the extras seemed insightful, so I made them available here as well. This was designed to be a slow paced thoughtful story. The Hokkaido atmosphere was especially nice. It originally ran once a month.

Thanks Moses, There’s a subplot with a news reporter in this as well. He was a interesting character too.

Thank you so much good work.

I’ll have to dig out my old dvd set of this and do a rewatch. If my memory serves me well it’s a good sci fi show.

You might prefer my encodes. He clean openings are nice to watch and the subs are a definite improvement. I to keep the subs from interfering with the video. The video might be just a touch sharper. I try not to change much. Color was good on the DVDs and it was consistent. It’s a well written story. I think what put this into obscurity was the long episodes. It does not target a specific audience either. It flips back and forth between sci fi and coming of age slice of life.

Lol why you encoded extras to MPEG2? they look horrible
Patjantess (uploader)
That’s the first time anybody ever commented on the extras I include. They looked just as bad in MPEG2 on the discs. Left them the same, I didn’t see a good reason to add loads of bytes for pretty much no reason. In respect to memory use, I guess that’s just old school. Disc space is exponentially cheaper now.
