So this is just a trial run. I started it and just want some opinions. I'll likely delete this torrent and release the whole season when I complete it. The raw source is Moozi's release, as for how the later seasons will hold up. only time will tell as I progress season by season.
I just wish to know if y'all think:
01) The English is syncing well.
02) Is it worth keeping the Japanese audio FLAC or should i convert to AC-3 like the English audio?
02a) Would you prefer the English audio as default or Japanese with subtitles as default?
03) If you'd like it x264 or x265 HEVC.
04) If you'd like it HEVC, is there certain things I should be aiming for in terms of quality control or interlacing .
05) If anyone know's if there is any viable English fan-subs for the Japanese audio (apart from the standard DVD subs that are apart of it).
05a) Do you guys want me to drop the first subtitle track (Opening / Ending) seeing as they're apart of the audio subtitles also?
I think though when I hate myself and power through all 5 season I'll do a dual release of untouched x264 and a HEVC release for those who can't take the file size, which judging from what I can see from these 4 and the sources... will be easily over 240GB for all 5 seasons in 1080p.
Thank you for your time guys and girls.

>The raw source is Moozi’s release
yikes
also the BD is just an upscale from the DVD master, so this is complete bloat as anything above DVD resolution is worthless
Any recommendation @Herkz? Source wise? I agree with the size.. Shit is massive. Hence why the end goal was HEVC with a very probable conversion of FLAC to AC3.
You think it's not worth it? as a project that is. As you can see from my previous uploads I prefer HEVC tbh so hence why I thought I might give it a shot and have it at a manageable size.
@herkz is there any good timed subs that work with the italian release? Also could I possibly bother you with a link for the italian release itself? I'm thinking of getting into the series again
I'll likely finish season 1, re-encode to HEVC, drop the FLAC bloat in favour of AC-3 and see how the size / quality retention goes. make it manageable. It may not be up some peoples alley but others might like it. Since there isn't any other BD releases (or any with any seeders) -- I don't see the harm.
Those who want it, can grab it if not there is always the HEVC release of seasons 1-5 with all the extras I've put up. Personally my sister loves it for her 4K TV since its crisp on there.
there's no other BD releases because it's pointless. like i said, the BD is upscaled from the DVD master. toei lost the film (except for the movies), so there's no magic way to add any detail beyond what's on the DVDs.
If you really wanna do this I'd say do it in 720p if you had the source. Other than that if you had another 1080p raw source probably go for that (with KAA subs, SMC subs along with the retail subs) instead of Moozi's unless you like his/her filter. It'll be like the ultimate dual audio version or something.
Is https://nyaa.si/view/1211645 the same video as this?
Stick to FLAC outright for both unless file size gets to you on audio then go for the highest QAAC setting possible. Don't ever use AC3 it's inferior to qAAC.
Thank you noZA_ . I think they are the same sources. Obviously Moozi's filtered his (I think? hence why the no-love train). But other than season 1 -- I personally don't see anything remotely close to 1080p or BD. I can scale down to 720p if that's what you mean? So you think that a 1440x1080 release is just redundant?
Also thank you for actually taking the time to give me advice. I get that a lot prefer the nostalgic style of the 90s artwork, but there are those out there who like like enhanced visualization. So it's a preference thing. I was planning to do it as a side project for my sister who obviously grew up with the show. I figured why not share... Just didn't think so much hate for that release lol..
The other RAW release has virtually no seeders also and is only 1 season so that makes the whole "complete package" concept a dead end for me.
I love this legendary anime, its okay if you doing this as side project but I hope you will share it,
well I prefer the x265 of course since it save my hdd space.
and no problem if you want do this in 720p .
about the audio, I dont know the different, just put the japan audio there, and its enough for me.
maybe you can consider this source? or its the same as moozi?
https://nyaa.si/user/salty1?f=0&c=0_0&q=sailor+moon
well that blows.. Didn't realise he more than just the 1 season. From what I know; Moozi' did filter them due to the source (as stated above) literally being an upscale. https://nyaa.si/view/1205127 as seen here with his examples.
but now there's hardly any seeders with Salt's release. Well maybe I can do the project. Downscale to 720p, switch to QAAC and possibly... in a separate folder have the English audio & subtitles for those who want to mux it into salty's? Basically try and retain as much quality as a reasonable size as this series front to end would be a quarter of a TB with the movies included I think -- Which is A LOT of space for a lot of people.
What I meant by 720p was if you had access to the blu-rays you could just downscale them and go from there. I do not know if it's redundant going the 1080p route but I have heard both Japan and US BD's are disappointing.
Of course you could opt to find RAW's in 720p but overall you must think what type of release do you plan on doing? The best release of Sailor Moon for the intent purpose of archiving or just a fun side project that's just for your sister or both. If it's just for your sister ultimately just aim for that and if you decide to share it on here too for those that may be interested. Tho if you re-encode it would be moot if going for the best.
If FLAC is a no go in the end than in regards to QAAC since the anime is old therefore the mastering of the audio may or may not be that great I would recommend going for the highest settings that being in cVBR 512 instead of q127 if it's just plain 2 channels. If it's got more than that, q127. And don't use Handrake's AAC encoder as I heard it could cause issues. I use foobar but you'll have to get the other files yourself if you go this route it's easy tho.
And if you decide to encode in HEVC I'd recommend turning off --no-sao and --no-strong-intra-smoothing as they kill details. It's better to only use them for higher CRF values like 18/19 and above and if you re-encode them possibly could benefit from turning it on as well.
I mean we already have the best releases on both sides of the spectrum:
Hark0n release: x264-10bit, 720p w/ SMC subs, FLAC 2.0, using ITA-DVD which is the best source currently
sxales: x265, 1080p w/ KAA subs, FLAC 2.0 using JPBD.
The JPBD is "clearer" at the expense of being cropped and loses a lot of grain and detail. This is a big no-no for some. Honestly THE best release would be for someone to take Hark0n's god-tier release and do minor touches on the video. But that takes experience. The last thing you want is someone trying to make the ITA-DVD clearer and end up looking like the BD.
If your sister knows you're working on this, download ep 1 of both releases and ask her what she likes. Cheers.
Yeah wow. Sorry the lag replying. Strange times to be living in.
Secondly thank you for the all the advice.
I sincerely didn't know they botched the f**k out of this BD release. To the point that a DVD release is superior.
As for my sister guys. Shes simple in the regard that sharpeness = clarity you know. So doesn't know or seen comparisons between say the US release, the ITA and the jap release. Let alone the BDRips.
I'm going to try and do season 1 this week and take into account everyone's recommendations and go HEVC route. See how the spacing goes. Save all these comments and delete this torrent / comment section.
I recently got to moddin my computer and upgrading certain competents so hopefully make my encoding life easier.
Other than was thinking of encoding these TVrips I have of beyblades dub seaosn 2 and 3. But TV quality... You know what that means.
