*** . This upload is a proof of concept idea for Kai's video and nothing more. . *** . Sources: Video (4:3) - USA BD Video (16 9) - German BD Audio (JPN) - USA BD Subs (ENG) - USA BD (OCRed + modified) . *** . Alright this requires some backstory to explain what this actually is. Dragon Ball Kai is a 2009 remaster of "Dragon Ball Z" and has two AR releases. 16 9 (cropped) and 4:3 (uncropped). These can actually be overlayed to create a larger frame pretty flawlessly if you have the patience and boredom required to do it. What I did in this episode is I took the 16:9 German BD and reframed it underneath the 4:3 US BD to extend the frame on the left and right hand side of the screen. The overall increase in viewable footage is actually only around 5.6% but it's pretty cool imo with the increase in AR from 4:3 to 4.28:3. . 4:3 https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/640200745194618905/707274541306609754/unknown.png 4:3 + 16:9 reframed https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/640200745194618905/707274604577816656/unknown.png . *** . The reason I chose to fast forward all the way to ep 35 is because eps 35-38 are based on 35mm film scans and look sharp as fuck compared to Q-Tecs 16mm film scans (not that 16mm film is blurry, look at Level Sets to see how ungodly sharp it can look) but I prefer to show this concept in the best light possible. Meanwhile doing this I discovered something pretty cool, the re-drawn shots for Kai were actually animated for the entire raw film scan and not just the visible portion of the screen. . https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/481891099711897602/707635486981619803/unknown.png . *** . This most likely won't ever end up as an actual release done by anyone or any group due to the amount of effort it takes. The shots where the 16:9 pan-and-scan shots are infuriatingly annoying to reframe due to it requiring frame-by-frame work. I'll be more up to doing this for more individual episodes if I can figure out how to do content-aware fill on the corners quickly and automatically instead of manually like in this example below. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/640200745194618905/707274687532630026/unknown.png. . What the concept above would look like in practice would look like this: 4:3 https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/640200745194618905/707281362167791646/unknown.png 4.28:3 https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/640200745194618905/707281396535787560/unknown.png . This would have a 7% increase in viewable footage meanwhile also making the pitch-black corners less noticeable. This method isn't perfect but it's a decent fix imo. . *** . I'm looking for R2J Shippuden DVDs. If you have them please feel free to send me a DM on discord and hopefully we can work something out. This is a good idea worth considering, although.. > Video (16 9) - German BD That's a weird choice over the French Blu-ray release as the German for Dragon Ball Kai had a number of different issues. I.e., darkness, smoothness, blurry, Kai logo to Z Kai logo, etc.
You Da Real MVP!!!

@impakt The darkness issue starts from ep ~55 onwards so this episode was fine for this usecase. I also didn't notice any issues like "smoothness" unless that issue also is on the US BD, otherwise I'm 99% sure there was pretty much no problem using that BD for this project. If I ever did this seriously I definitely would change to using the French BD and also the Japanese BD but that's just too much effort for me to want to attempt because I don't have those on-hand like I do the German BD and US BD.
Trust me, this shit is not worth it at all !
Too bad the date is not 2020-04-01 bro. :D

@The-good_Man1994 Any chance you could explain what you mean. Is the concept not worth it? Is the upload not worth downloading?
@Scoped i dont know how much work you put into this but as a proof of concept its pretty amazing, hopefully you could find an easier way to build each episode or a few people to help you cause a full release would be legendnary, i for one appreciate all the effort you put into this
I'm super super superrrrr interested in this concept! I mean, you get more viewable footage with this, who in their right mind can say no to that?! Also I don't really care about filling the corners, the overlayed image alone is good enough for me. If I knew how to do this whole overlaying thing, you can bet your sweet ass I would have done it already! I won't hide that I wish you or anyone would do the entire series like that, however I do realize that it'll take way too much time and effort, way more than anyone would be willing to invest. In any case I would like to thank you for showing me that what I always wanted to do is at the very least possible.
>who in their right mind can say no to that? People who don't really care for some fan's iffy redraws in the corners tbh
If you are referring to the corners being artificially filled, then yes, I don't really care about that as well. The increased footage due to overlaying the 4:3 and 16:9 images, however, that is pretty sweet, but I can understand people seeing that increase as being negligible. In the end, it all comes down to the "different strokes for different folks" saying.

@AngelSpain This isn't possible for anything beyond Kai lol. Season Sets + Black Bricks seems semi-possible for Z but why spend so much effort on garbage,
how is you naruto remasterd realeas coming in hand ?
