I remember when Chihiro used to translate Chinese subtitles to English instead of translating directly from Japanese. Topkek, was a terrible time for fansubs. In comparison, today's fansub scene is much better for fans.

True, but only because "fansub" groups like Chihiro STARTED EDITING CR instead of translating themselves! Seriously, these subs essentially *are* CR's scripts, with some edits like "Divine Brother" -> "Kami-nii-sama". The "dual audio versions with meh subs" also use the CR translations. There is not much in the way of substantial difference between the three options, but anime viewers blindly believe anything illegitimate to be "good," and anything legitimate to be "bad," even when the scripts are basically the same.
Granted, fan-edited versions like this Chihiro release may improve some things like karaoke / timing / typesetting, and may make some different localization choices that purist viewers might prefer. But they certainly don't deserve "all the credit," because they didn't produce these translations -- CR did. So those who would say "Yeah, those were the times, fuck cr" are really just shooting themselves in the foot, because if CR and the like shut down, we're back to waiting weeks for bad translations. The fansubbing scene of 2007 is not coming out of cryostasis to save us, because nobody is staying up til 4 AM just so 999999animu can release their bootleg streams when their users expect them to.
