Translations are usually mixed with localization. If the translator think that people outside the culture wouldn't understand, it's a common practice to use the equivalent that your target audience would understand. However, in no case whatsoever is it a good idea to translate English into English....it's just stupid. Sadly, official translations tend to make subs for those of low brain power. Of course, this just increases the desire and appreciation when a decent to good fan-sub group shows up.....so necessary evil I guess?
