Here it is, finally! I spent a lot of time fixing issues with the source such as the haloing and rainbow artifacts, and I’m pretty happy with the result. The difference between my encode and the others that are available is obvious, and since the WEB-DL from MagicStar is a clear upscale, this remains smaller while also looking a lot better.
But don’t take my word for it, here’s a comparison between the other three releases: https://slow.pics/c/LNTsmxqO
And keep in mind that my encode has untouched audio while the other DVD releases have re-encoded audio. And the Web-DL sourced from TBS does not have the original music, likely due to a licensing issue.
I hope someone OCR’s JTV’s hardsubs so I don’t have to put it on my never-ending to-do list. This took a lot longer than expected because I had a two corrupt discs. Big thanks to binomayigu for uploading new DVDISO’s for me!

So yours is the same as this. Except you sharpened the videos.

@Hifumi_l There is no sharpening, what are you on about? The torrent you linked was the stretched considerably to the point where everyone looks fat. Has re-encoded audio into shitty mp3 and uses the ancient xvid codec as well as uses a file-size target of 700mb for all the episodes. This is made especially worse because the first and last episode are over an hour long, and yet that release uses the same bitrate regardless.
At least check the comparison I linked in the torrent description before commenting.

Looks good to me (tested the files from the earlier incomplete torrent); the one thing one could complain about is that it’s a minor upscale, I guess (from 720x480 to 720x540.) With an anamorphic picture (the upscaling from 480 to 540 is then done during decoding) the file sizes probably would have been smaller.

There’s a few problems with doing that though. You’re relying on people’s players to handle it correctly or to work with it at all so there’s less compatibility. VapourSynth has no concept of pixel aspect ratio’s so filters are going to be stronger on the x axis, e.g the dehalo I used. Some upscaling algorithms may handle it incorrectly making the picture not look as good as it could. The filesize would be a bit smaller, but the drawbacks were not worth it for me.
I suppose, if i didn’t care about device compatibility, and I wasn’t doing any filtering I might have done it though. If I didn’t care about device compatibility, i would’ve used non-standard aspect ratio’s on an episode-by-episode basis as well because the aspect ratio was never really a true 4:3 ratio. The sides always had black bars on all the episodes, some more than others. I left some of the black bars in on the sides in order to keep as much height as much as I could because black bars on the sides of a 4:3 video don’t matter when everyone has 16:9 screens, the sides are going to be black anyway. However, in some of the episodes the sides are were white and flickering like mad so i had to crop them out which mean losing a few pixels on the height in order to maintain a 4:3 ratio for compatibility. In both cases, using non-standard resolutions would’ve helped lower the file-size a tad and in the latter case, i could’ve kept more of the height.

It is an improvement over that dvd version. I appreciate it a lot. Hope to see your next upload.
Maybe you can re-encode Good Luck!! (2003).
The version that is shared here is over 2GB each episode. ?

I have already OCR’ed all of the subtitles from JTV’s hardsubbed DVD release of Good Luck!! I spent 2 months retiming, going line by line and making everything perfect. Before I did that, there was no soft-subtitles at all for the series it was locked to a shitty old DVD realease, but now people can watch the Blu-Ray with subtitles. I even added in karaoke, fixed up translation issues and more. You can find the subtitles on D-Addicts: https://www.d-addicts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=164924 That WiKi encode is quite good, I couldn’t get it much smaller without hurting quality so I don’t see a reason to work on that when there are so many other shows which are desperate for good releases. For instance, I have yet to see an encode of the Long Vacation’s Blu-Rays even though it’s been quite some time since they came out and are a big upgrade over the DVD’s.
Here’s a list of what I’ve done and have planned:
Full releases (original encodes, with major work on subtitles):
Orange Days (2004) - Purchased and made encodes from Blu-Ray, went through every single subtitle line retiming, heavily editing, fixing translation issues, restyled subtitles and added karaoke… This took me a whole year
Original Encodes with minor or no work on subtitles:
Beautiful Life (2000) - Original encode from DVDiso, filtered out a lot of issues in the source with VapourSynth.
Mischeivious Kiss: Love in Tokyo (2013) - Lazy encode from BDMV, retimed 13 subtitle languages + muxed in PGS Chinese subs & OCRed English PGS subs.
MetalicBox (uploader)
Subtitle work:
Crying out Love, in the Center of the World (2004) - OCR’ed SARS hardsubs (11) got scripts for the rest and QC’ed them to the Blu-Ray with some improvements.
Osozaki no Himawari / Late blooming Sunflower (2012) - Made lots of edits to the first episode, and lazily retimed the rest to the blu-ray using Sushi.
Galileo season 1 & 2 (2007) - Retimed to Blu-Ray with edits + transcribed s1 e4 from the SARS hardsub release
Quartet (2017) - Retimed to Blu-Ray
Byakuyakou / Journey Under a Midnight Sun (2006) - Retimed to Blu-Ray and translated some missing lines
Josee, the Tiger and the Fish (2003) - OCR’ed official PGS subtitles
Nemureru Mori no Jukujo / Sleeping Jukujo (2012) - OCR’ed subtitles for the first episode from koitsu’s hardsub release, now there’s soft-subs for every episode.
Good Luck!! (2003) - OCR’ed subtitles from JTV’s hardsub release with help from zwuw. I then made lots of improvements and timed them with the Blu-Ray.
Tokyo Love Story (1991) - Greatly improved translation and timing for 1-3 from areiacreations. OCR’ed 10 from the SARS hardsub release and obtained original SARS subtitle scripts for the rest. Also retimed 1-6 to the Blu-Ray.
Ryuusei no Kizuna / Ties of Shooting Stars (2008) - Retimed subs to BluRay
SUMMER NUDE (2013) - Retimed subs to 1080p HDTV (lazy sushi retime)
Papa Doru / My Daddy is an Idol (2012) - Retimed to Blu-Ray (lazy sushi retime)
Current:
The Things You Taught Me (2000) - Finished encoding and OCRing vobsubs. Subtitle editing, retiming and QC progress: 5/12
Tokyo Love Story (1991) - Improving Areiacreations (awful) subtitles 3/6
Last Christmas (2004) - OCR progress: 1/11
Planned:
Long Vacation (1996) - Encode Blu-Rays
Pride (2004) - All episodes have been OCR’ed, but need to recheck HDTV differences

Get an account on AvistaZ most of that stuff is there. They open up for sign-ups every so often. Sugao no mama de just got a blu-ray a few months ago too but I have yet to see it anywhere. Subtitles for a lot of those shows are on D-Addicts as well, e.g https://www.d-addicts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=163803 https://www.d-addicts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=87041 https://www.d-addicts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=95390
My upload speed sucks, and no one keeps stuff seeded on Nyaa, so I’m reluctant to upload things. If you’re absolutely desperate and are willing to keep things seeded for a long time i guess I can upload a few though. I have Pure and Virgin Road, so I uploaded those.
ken_jiro
Thanks!

I’m looking for uploading “sugao no mama de” high quality.

I just told you that no one has ripped the Blu-Ray yet. Get into avistaz and similar places and wait. Or, buy the Blu-Ray which released a few weeks ago on the 20th of November, and upload it so people can make encodes. Can find it on amazon.co.jp etc.
kaikochan
Thank you very much for this!! Do you have any status updates on your plans for Long Vacation & Pride?
tungdtac
can you give me japansese sub from the dvd please. thanks
MetalicBox (uploader)
Sorry, haven’t done much lately. Same status as before. Real Life takes priority. Though I have a 5950x now so encoding is less of a hassle.
Kuribo31
seed please 🥺
