Volume 85 completely in English, including redrawn sound effects (except for the Usopp Gallery Pirates pages because I don't have translations for those). As with all volumes since 76, I used the Viz translations for the most part, only altering names/spellings according to my personal preference, while also fixing some mistakes here and there. While working on this volume, I found myself wondering if Oda is *trying* to add more sound effects with each subsequent volume... A heck of a lot of work this one was, and it just doesn't seem to get any easier. On top of that, I had to adjust to using a different Viz source, and I also underwent emergency surgery during this time (from which I'm actually still recovering). So look, while I do this for myself almost as much as I do it for all you One Piece fans, I wouldn't mind some words of encouragement every now and then to help get me through the next volume, because this can get to be awfully stressful at times, and it helps to know that all of this hard work isn't going unnoticed. With that said, enjoy volume 85 in color! I don't know much about Discord servers, but the comments here have raised my spirits, and that's really all I needed. Work on volume 86 is already underway, and hopefully it takes less time that this volume did. It's starting out promising in that regard, but I know it gets to be pretty action-packed later on, so we'll see just how much of those lovely sound effects Oda piles on later. @aptop6 - Thanks for that, it was a very relevant SBS question, and it doesn't surprise me at all! I've read a lot of manga, but I'd be hard pressed to think of an author who uses more sound effects than Oda. @Da_Pikmin_Coder - Thank you! I saw your work, and you did a great job with those effects. I'm thinking that, more than a lot of people, you understand the amount of work it takes to completely redraw those things. It's not an easy task, and I totally understand not wanting to do much more of it. Those first few volumes are actually the first ones I ever did, so I'd probably do some things differently nowadays, but I'm still really happy with them. You're right, the Viz translations weren't great early on, and that's why I didn't use them. Not only that, but sometimes Stephen Paul's translations for those early volumes are oddly-worded, so I didn't use those verbatim either. As for the SFX, the biggest reason that I don't do them for the earlier volumes is because, if I were to do that, I would never finish this project. But for the newest volumes, I don't mind doing the SFX too much (though it gets to be pretty trying when three volumes are dropped at once, haha...).

Thanks for this. Great work as always. I hope you have a speedy recovery. You should start a discord server, many people prefer it over Nyaa comments.
Thank you so much and very much appreciated! I'm always looking forward to the colored version as its just so much better to view in than the typical black and white version due to the complexity of the drawings. Do get well soon though!!
Thank you! I really appreciate all the good work. I hope you have a speedy recovery as well! ^^ I am all on board the idea of Discord. You should defintely consider one.
Here's a question asked in old sbs. Oda does use a lot of sound effects. D: Hey! Odacchi!! I conducted an investigation during my very busy summer vacation. You know how you use "Don!" or "Donnn!!" a lot, as a sound effect? So I counted the number of times "Don" was used in One Piece, through Volume 42, Chapter 409! (Only counting Don, Donnn, Dodon, Dodonnn. Excluded sounds which I suspected to be gunshots or attack sounds) My unofficial count found a grand total of 1,469 DONS! (Donnn!!) On average, that makes about 3.5 Dons in every chapter. Did you know that?? Is there any other mangaka which uses "Don" so often? Come on guys, let's give him a round of applause! Clap clap clap... wow. Yes! Now that you're in a good mood, let's END THE SBS!!! (DODONNN) P.N. SYAM no M O: Waaaaait! Let me say something first! HOW MUCH FREE TIME DO YOU HAVE?! (LOL) No really, thanks a lot. I guess that's just how many scenes I felt confident in! See you next volume!
I love your work! I was kinda inspired by it and wanted to make a Viz replica of the older chapters (Check it out! https://imgur.com/a/lPJZI8U). In doing so, I kinda understand why you went the route you did for volumes 1-3. Early Viz translations used to suck... bad. Not just the dialogue, but the SFX too. Not only are they weird choices of words, but they're unnecessarily thick. I'm guessing they didn't want to put a lot of work into redrawing back then. Still I'm pretty happy with the result. But I'm not sure if I'd do a whole lot more of it, I just kinda wanted to see what it'd look like.
Thank you for this. It's wonderful work.
Any reason as to why you chose the viz translations ? Just curious.
Awesome work! Thanks for this!
