@Nala_Alan I normally don't add in honorifics in anything I sub, but Takagi is a different case considering that there are parts in the manga that revolve around their honorifics for each other and stuff, which would be lost in translation if I chose to remove them. There's no way in knowing whether or not something like that would come up this season, so I played it safe.

default track without honorifics, marked as 'eng' secondary track with honorifics, marked as 'enm' When you're willing to put forth the effort (and can figure out a way to elegantly remove them all for the first track; some shows make this difficult or near-impossible), this is probably the best way to go about things.

@The0x539 That would be the most optimal resolution if I was encoding with something like HEVC, but I'm not, and I don't want the filesize to get larger than it needs to be. Most likely I'll make an alternative sub file with honorifics available on my carrd website for those who want that.

uhh what? subtitles are usually below 1 MB in size. unless you do hardsubs, which you shouldn't, it literally doesn't affect size at all

yeah filesize isn't even remotely a concern lol even an insane 36-thousand-line script (overdone kfx and a drawn-out motion track) from chihiro is under 10 MB and when compressed (subtitle tracks are usually compressed when muxed into an mkv) gets down to 288K. remember that the subtitle format we all use is just text

@Aryma No I don't, in fact, Episode 2 will be softsub only. Encoding hardsubs takes too long for my taste. Regardless, I'll find a way to rectify this issue.

@Asakura I translated them myself. They aren't based on Google Translate. I do free-lance translation in other things (youtube, discord, etc) so I have gotten pretty fast at doing it. Plus, this isn't *too* complicated of a show to translate.

please add the honorifics, people who don't like them have no understanding of japanese culture and should be watching cartoon network instead of being here, the different honorifics do add subtle yet important details on the conversations, if someone has a problem with them then they rather buy the subbed blu-ray when it comes out and don't bother other people with their opinions, they're basically getting anime and subtitles for free here so if they don't like it they are free to do something to their liking by themselves

@dfpr Honorifics aren't necessary. In 99% of cases, they just don't add anything meaningful to the dialogue. If someone doesn't understand what honorifics are or mean, then adding them won't make any difference. If someone does understand honorifics and care about them, then they can still hear the honorifics in the audio, so nothing of value is really lost. Also, people who don't understand the intricacies of the Japanese language are the *target audience* of a translation in the first place, so I don't really think there's any need to disparage them for that.

Someone made a sub set..the one linked above ..i could not believe... with names of speakers in parentheses.....uh, that is totally unnecessary and bizarre. I hope someone releases a set that is normal as well as good trans. and YES THERE IS every reason to add honorifics ALWAYS> they are a intrinsic part of our Japanese culture. If you dont like them dont watch anime. And as dfpr-san said above, watch cartoon network.

@AdamEve Those parentheses are used almost exclusively for when the speaker is not shown on the screen or may be ambiguous. They are intended for people who may be deaf or otherwise hard of hearing. I don't find it bizarre at all, and it's sad to see that it bothers you so much.

@Koveshel your subs have those parentheses even when there's only one speaker on screen. septet's subs (https://nyaa.si/view/1159160) are better imho

@drte so, according to your logic, if nishikata were to say "takagi-san", "takagi-chan" or "takagi-sama" it would absolutely make no difference and should be translated as just "takagi", right? LOL

@dfpr Assuming you aren't deaf, there is a perfectly fine japanese audio track with all of your honorifics. Maybe try listening.

@dfpr That would make a difference. But the way we would *express* that difference in English is not by saying "-san", "-chan", or "-sama". What you're advocating for is lazy translation. If Nishikata started referring to himself as "watashi" or Takagi started referring to herself as "ore", even though it's significant, any decent translator would not have "watashi/ore" replacing every instance of "I" in the subs. The way people talk in English is not the same as the way people talk in Japanese, and vice-versa. If you like septet's subs more, that's fine. I have nothing against him, and I'm sure his subs are great too. But I think you're being a bit obtuse by refusing to watch any subs that don't feature honorifics, especially since most shows *don't need* them (i.e. all the relationship dynamics in the show can be understood contextually and from the dialogue) And by the way, I literally just scrubbed through the subs again, and I could not find a *single* frame where only one character was on screen, with their mouth visible and moving, speaking for the entirety of the line. I'm sorry if your brain isn't capable of filtering out parentheses (especially those that come at the beginning of a line) and if my subs caused you any distress.
