This is the complete batch of test encode for AV1 in 1080p of Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san.
I’m not going to encode more in AV1 for now unless I get a dedicated encode machine as is painfully slow, for other part in constant quality q50 is really low but more in 480p than in 1080p, at least in 1080p is more than watchable without very obvious issues that are present in the 480p version. Also q50 is the lower that I recommend for 1080 or higher as after this point the quality drops very rapidly, this is because I consider q50 a good trade of quality/bitrate for use in a phone (if the phone can decode it, something rare for now).
From my extensive test of AV1 using libaom, libaom goes from needing twice the bitrate of h265 to less than half the bitrate of h265 to match its quality, this is highly dependent of the resolution, the video content and the bitrate. The good news is that actually it needs normally from 15% to 40% with an average of about 30% less bitrate than h265 to mach it (the case of needing twice the bitrate is exceptional and only in a couple of hard samples like LosslessTouhou, it needing less than half the bitrate is also excepcional but less with animation at 1080p of higher and specially at 4k).
