Well 20 years on and ADV going tits up, pretty well says no blurays anytime soon. So I bought the Laserdiscs, encoded them once, then encoded them twice, cause the first time erased all the detail. W files are huge but was only way to get all detail. For W I would suggest MPC with deinterlace, denoise, sharpen complex 2. If you sit close you will notice the macroblocking of the Laserdisc. Sit back and it looks better. Excess encoded much better. Like the GS mikami laser discs, it seemed they used a compression that caused smaller data blocks and it looked better. cav cab cabac whatever, i don't remember. Also included is the "alley Scene" absent from the USA release of Burn UP. There was a burn up cel in collection of Anime Cel seller on net. Rio Jumping out of her cop clothes. I could never figure out where that cel came from. Well anyways the deleted scene is here to upset the moral majority and algorites. Also I did work on the subtitles adding color, repositioning, and translating the Burn up W op song. Also the region 2 DVD's were not as good as the Laserdiscs. I also matched the color of these as best as possible to anime cels I have of the show. Little oversaturated, buts thats how I like it.

That doesn't explain why you left Audio uncompressed, can you please explain that ? You can keep lossless audio format with several options, most popular is FLAC Lossless Audio. I'm pretty damn sure you can find encoders on sourceforge and if you use IFME IIRC they have it installed already. I mean, seriously ? Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 720x480 29.97fps [Stream 00] Audio: PCM 96000Hz stereo 3072kbps [Stream 01] You encode the video, if you wanted a better filesize vs quality you could have used H265 instead. Why not encode audio to FLAC instead of PCM uncompressed ?
I'm confused. Are you saying that the LD version has scenes that the DVD version does not?

Numbers dude. Yep you like numbers. Sure I could have compressed it into lossy codecs that all cel phone users love. As you can see I did not. I did this at least 4 or 5 years ago, and H265 was very very new. I read a huge long article and it showed h265 compressed better, but h264 looked better. I was trying for a encode that had better detail, look at the macroblocking, like film grain it can be removed with a filter, but I could never totally remove it without screwing the detail. Don't worry someone will probably take this and run it through a h265 conversion. I was only interested in keeping quality as good as I could get it. I messed with at least 70 different filter chains before I got it to where capture was same as original. Oh PS: I recorded all my records to 96/24 wav and then converted some to FLAC. FLAC does not sound as good as a wav in side by side comparison. But you need good stereo with Subwoofer, soundcard to tell difference. Compression is compression = loss of something. Dmon- yes there is a scene in Excess that did not appear in the USA DVD release that is in the Laserdiscs! lol I wont say what ep so you will have to watch show again! Also I started watching again, and the W looks fine with no filters, switched to VLC for Excess and added a little sharpening. Just sit back from screen or you will see the laserdisc artifacts.
OK, then can some kind soul tell me what episode that missing scene is in?
What you really want is a Domesday Duplicator (https://collectr.blogspot.com/2018/11/domesday.html), which captures the RF signal right off the laser and then decodes it in software. The compressed RF capture is as close to an "archive" of a laserdisc as you can get.
I'm not surprised you were/are losing detail, because you aren't using optimal x264 settings (0 bframes, no trellis and you could also use more refs). But most importantly you are not using psyrdo and not using adaptive quantization either - that's a big no, and leads to huge quality/detail losses. You still have large bitrate luckily, but since I'm encoding those bitrates often with almost maxed x264 settings and all psy enabled, I think I can guarantee that this is hurting you. Your x264 build isn't completely paleolithic (the headers say it supports psyrdo and AQ but you have it disabled), so I think you should try them. Keep the bitrate high, that's not an issue, that's a good thing IMHO :D

Thanks OnDeed. Honestly i am pretty sure I compared the encodes with AQ and without. The AQ was smearing detail. Honestly my old computer crashed and I have no encoding software on this rig, so I cant even go back and look at settings. It was a weird filter chain. Like I said I did turn off the AQ as it was effecting detail. plus each old dvd, vhs etc is a challenge unto itself. I was also erasing a lot of detail with a deblocking filter. Plus there were so many filter chains I saved that the one I used I had a hard time remembering. Plus the TV750 ATI introduced those color flashes. It seems to me now that I look at it is it was seeking ahead and pulling down frames and flashing primary color. lol I encoded a bunch of Lupin the Third movies, like 13 of em from laserdisc! Could not resist all those laserdics for 1,000 yen! I should go look for wild 7 1974 laserdiscs lol.....
For those interested: Extra scene episode 3: 22:01.253 -> 23:57.669 Other then that, don't bother. The LD looks brighter and more colorful, but the size is too large and the image is VERY jaggy. Especially on pans.

Please enable deinterlace, yadif in VLC and it reduces the tearing. Yes I oversharpened it and that caused said tearing, nevertheless I have seen it on commercial DVD's and Isekai Quartet is showing it in 720p version. Its free. Sue me. Also it is really mostly evident in Burn Up W and not so much in Excess as I said the disk encodes were of different quality.
"PS: I recorded all my records to 96/24 wav and then converted some to FLAC. FLAC does not sound as good as a wav in side by side comparison. But you need good stereo with Subwoofer, soundcard to tell difference. Compression is compression = loss of something." You really have no idea of how to encode. FLAC is lossless, not lossy, so the file is a bit for bit copy of the wav one. PCM 96000Hz stereo 3072kbp??? I do not think that LD has that audio quality.

In VLC enabling de-interlacing and choosing Yadif is working well at clearing up jaggies in Burn Up W. If you are watching it on desktop and sitting close it is readily apparent. Sit back and it blends away nicely. Also no sharpening.
do you have the Raw laser disc images ?
I found this interesting since I enjoyed W and have yet to watch Excess. My ADV DVDs have been waiting on my shelf but I didn't realize there was that extra scene. I'm quite interested in laserdiscs now and if Japan DVD video quality is unsatisfactory and if HD restoration on Blu-ray never comes out then I'd really like to see a Domesday encode however I know not everyone has the hardware for that. In terms of audio, I'm not sure how it really is since I don't have them but apparently it has both digital and analog audio tracks as stated on the laserdisc database. I don't know if this was common practice but It states the analog track was encoded using CBS CX Noise Reduction system for expanded dynamic range. I knew digital for sure since I saw it on a photo of the packaging. Digital audio on a laserdisc is the same as CD which is 44.1kHz 16bit PCM. I looked at the spectrogram of W episode 1 and that is indeed what the natural cutoff point looks to be. So if anything the analog audio could be recorded in 24bit and above 44.1kHz for testing purposes since I have no idea what kind of fidelity is actually contained withing the analog track but the digital track is CD quality. And if you're saying PCM sounds better than FLAC at the same spec, there might be something wrong with your decoding because FLAC is literally just zipped up PCM just like how other lossless codecs work.

Oh hello Damian. oh look namills too. Namils, no I don't have the raws, but after ripping Ghost Sweeper Mikami and saving them as lossless lagarith, hmm interesting. the ghost sweeper mikami LD rips i did did not look as good as the sentai DVD's- detail wise. The exception being the LD of the GS Mikami movie. Which does look better than the DVD release i have copy of. It would explain why the GSM r2 dvd's still go for 180 to 300 or whatever dollars!! Better than the Bluray release, which like Dirty Pair, so much detail was erased= grain lovers whine. These burn up rips have more detail than USA and R2 japan DVD's. I did buy the r2 DVD's of Dirty Pair S1- the 2003 or so ones with the white covers and silver lettering- those are superior to bluray release vid qual wise. I want to put up mikami movie, but I encoded it in full RGB! The ati theater pro 750 introduces random white flashes, when using the s-video input, not the yellow rca, which i run through a old vcr remove copyright protection gizmo. the gradient light to dark protection scheme protectio= if you remember ripping a vhs lol!!! anyways that gizmo helps reduce the 750 bitch habit of making those white flashes. some of which are visible in this release every so ofter= maya pink flash comes to mind. lol

conitnued lol- Domesday encoder I looked into= also buying a really top end laserdisc player from japan. The domesday does make a seemingly sharper image on paper- more detail. Oh yeah- running my vid card on my big screen tv at 4:2:2 10 bit made the flashing worse. By turning my ati card to 4:4:4 8 bit on my hisense it seemed that the flashing was lessened. damian it is uncanny and eerie how excess foreshadowed 911. it remains one of my faves. also i have recorded vinyl into 24/96 dolby digital. I compared flac to .windows .wav and flac lost detail in the bass register. Just like a vhs- compression = a loss somwhere. I am dealing with turntable I soldered .995 and .999 wires to head shell and rca plugs. used a ortophon x5-mc and a auzentec meridien 2g with a 140 s/n ratio playback lool. it takes serious equiptment to hear that difference but it is there. Also playback in 44khtz is juicier treble, the bass gets boomier in 96, the soundstage changes. Most of time i use a zonar DS set at 44. I bought a billy joel digital encode vinyl record. It was recorded in 8 bit digital. It sounded like crap compared to the regular analog vinyl!!
@DmonHiro Thank you. Idk why he could just tell you lol
