thank you :-) I wish I could remember what I saw years ago that this reminds me of ... the background scenery, and especially the references to looking for water in what essentially is a wasteland left over after some sort of holocaust

^ It’s a very generic setting and a search for water is an element of many post-apocalyptic stories. I’ll just tell you the one that’s most similar but good: Now and Then, Here and There (Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku) problem is. that’s mostly orange and not black. You may be thinking of BLAME, but if I remember correctly, that’s not about a search for water.
