![alt text](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/sK-zsyrU1XY/maxresdefault.jpg "The Irregular at magic high school The Movie") Gekijouban Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei:Hoshi Wo Yobu Shoujo ~ The Irregular at magic high school The Movie:The Girl Who Summons the Stars V3 taken from the Source BD Encoded by me with great care. Note: The subs have some major translational corrections vs the Citrussubs release, though we do carry the Karaoke from them over to our subtitles. The subtitles are also so far edited that these are not anymore an edit of the other subbers mentioned. They are more or less large fixes to ensure the largest gist of all is corrected. This is the reason we named it [NepSubs] as our internal started subber-team worked hard on this. Changelog: https://pastebin.com/bLXPYYDZ In this release, only the subs are edited and updated that is the only change. [Video] Codec: H265 HEVC Encoder: x265 10Bit Resolution: 1920x1080 Framerate: 23.976 [Audio] Track1: Flac 24-Bit lossless audio with Japanese in 5.1 Surround Track2: Flac 24-Bit lossless audio with Japanese in 2.0 Stereo [Subtitles] Track 1 - [NepSubs] Subs Track 2 - [NepSubs] Subs (No Karaoke) Chapters included [Video quality] We use CRF 18, a high-quality bitrate setting that is a standard recommendation on Doom9 (the expert encoding forum). Rest assured that this video will look perfectly fine even when watched closely on a large screen. CRF 18 avoids pointlessly bloating bitrate for virtually no gain, so you get a great balance of quality and size. [Audio quality] This encode uses FLAC, which is lossless but also very large. For virtually the same quality at a much lower filesize, download our [Small] encode instead, which uses lossy AAC encoding to strike a better balance. (The video in both encodes is identical.) So, this is the definitive version? No more updates?

Well let's hope so XD WE did really spend some time for this.
Why would you uses 265 for this?
Thank you to Nep_Blanc and MrSergio for allowing me to work on correcting the translations for this V3. Yup this should be the final definitive version, @uberasian . Some examples of the major changes with rough timecode: PREV: (0:11:02.94) In the case it blows up mid-air,\Nits rests will most likely hit the South China Sea NEW: (0:11:02.94) From the location where it is most likely to explode mid-air, NEW: (0:11:06.94) it will land in the East China Sea. PREV (0:25:26.33) In case a giant CAD machine is used, all of a magician's senses are controlled by the machine's programs to automatically build a Magic Sequence. It's a common case scenario. NEW: (0:25:26.33) When a giant CAD machine is used, NEW: (0:25:28.94) a magician automatically compiles a \NMagic Sequence according to data elements NEW: (0:25:33) fully described by the CAD's Activation Sequence. NEW: (0:25:36.37) Such a case isn't rare. "大型CADを使う場合、魔法師は全ての要素が記述された起動式に従って、魔法式を自動的に組み立てると言うケースも、珍しくない。" - This is such a chunky technical line, so let's break it down. 大型CADを使う場合 = When giant CAD is used 魔法師は全ての要素が記述された起動式に従って = Magician (魔法師), according/obeying (従って) to (data) elements (要素) fully (全て) described (記述された) by Activation Sequence (起動式) 魔法式を自動的に組み立てる = Magic Sequence (魔法式) can be automatically (自動的) compiled (組み立てる) と言うケースも、珍しくない。= Such a case isn't rare.
PREV (0:40:49) Tatsuya: I, too, didn't want to abandon that girl. PREV (0:40:54.02) Tatsuya: To counter the body adjustments, I knew I had to replace sympathy with rationality, but... PREV (0:41:08.50) Miyuki: Even for you, I think that by no means it was an evil act. NEW (0:40:49.18) I, too, am unable to abandon that girl. NEW (0:40:54.02) Even though I understand that becoming overly sympathetic to the genetically modified being would chip away at my composure... NEW (0:41:08.50) Even for you, I think that by no means this is a bad thing. The previous lines were translated as if Tatsuya was talking about Honami (the girl in Miyuki's flashback just before), but he is actually talking about Kokoa as he gazed at her through the window. First, Miyuki asked if wanting to help Kokoa is a rash action not well thought out. Then, Tatsuya asked her, even if what she feels is sympathy, it's not a light feeling that one acts impulsively upon right. Then Miyuki have flashback of this girl, Honami, and then Miyuki affirms that yeah it's not a light feeling that she just acted upon compulsively. Then Tatsuya now says this line: Ore mo (Me too), ano ko no koto wo misuterarenakatta (I am unable to just abandon that girl). Here, 'girl' refers not to the flashback girl, but to Kokoa, as Tatsuya is speaking from his perspective, and the flashback belongs to Miyuki, not Tatsuya. Misuterareru = able to abandon, Misuterarenai = unable to abandon, Misuterarenakatta = unable to abandon and decided to give up even thought of abandoning (thus past tense). This is actual line by Tatsuya Misutetakunakatta = did not want to abandon her
Line as taken from manga (and kept same in movie): 調整体に対する過度の同情心から、冷静さを欠いているとは、分かっているんだが 調整体= modified being, but i suspect it's a literary technique of using substitute kanji in 整; 調製 = manufacture, so it would mean 'artificial/manufactured beings'. "body adjustment/modification" would have been 身体改造 or 身体変工 に対する = with regards to 過度の同情心から = from (から) too much (過度) sympathy (同情心) 冷静さを欠いている = chips away (欠いて) at composure (冷静さ) As you can see, Tatsuya is continuing to talk about Kokoa, but referring to her as 調整体, because the thought of Kokoa as an experimental, artificially modified being undergoing cruel experiments, arouses his strong sympathy as well (like how it did for Miyuki), but he has to be careful not to let it grow too much, or else it would chip away at his composure (and may result in him making the wrong judgment/decision etc, which might endanger Miyuki whom he had sworn a duty to protect). Line: お兄様にとっても、決して悪いことではないと思います Miyuki is saying it in present tense. What she means is that, Tatsuya should not feel sorry or bad that he's affected to the extent of perhaps losing some composure, because it shows there's still some human compassion in him after all despite the conditioning to lose emotions. That's why Miyuki is kinda happy to have her otherwise mostly emotionless brother, show some 'emotion'. The previously translated line feels like there is a misunderstanding as if Tatsuya is speaking as if the flashback belonged to him and not to Miyuki, and that he somehow had abandoned this flashback girl, which would be 'an evil act' but which Miyuki forgives him for. But in fact, the flashback rightfully belongs to Miyuki, and Tatsuya has no way of knowing Miyuki was thinking of that particular girl in that flashback. --- There were some other such major translation changes to better capture the essence of what was really said, and various grammatical and minor corrections etc all over. Hope you like the fruit of our labours. Enjoy XD
Thank you for the subs, I have been waiting a long time for this to be translated :)
not bad, but hevc....

Hevc is the future and well also if you use Plex it isn't a problem. Or just get another release, get the subs from animetosho mux those in or install the fonts and place the subs in the same folder with the same name. Otherwise don't worry about that it is hevc, it doesn't look any worse than any x264 release that is a load larger.
How good are the subs?
Typesetting needs work... The only on-screen Japanese text is when they tell you the location/date, but the subtitle style has been "reused" so it doesn't match the style of the Japanese text in all. The harsh shadow in the main subtitle style isn't too my liking either, nor is the blue karaoke font. Video quality is poor, but watchable. More like webstream quality than blueray quality. Especially noticeable in darker scenes. My own fault really, I should have noticed this was a 1.6 GB encode and just skipped it, but the 5.1 + 2.0 FLAC audio tracks threw me off as that adds 3 GB to the size... Honestly, using FLAC audio on such a low quality video is silly if you ask me.
I guess you can save your salt for when you actually give input, what do you say? The fact you're telling us that what we did sucks is just a rant, as it is right now. The style for subtitles was done by me (karaoke at the end was by Xeon), for the first time in my life, so I have no clue what you even wanted me to do (which is one more reason to ignore your comment, seeing all you do is complaining). Give me something different than "your liking" only, and we might actually talk.
I only commented because the description explicitly asked for it, don't expect me to put too much effort into it, I didn't expect anyone to actually change anything because of it. When I say it doesn't match the style, try to match the style. One of the scenes in question: https://i.imgur.com/7uquYye.jpg The Japanese text does not use an outline, so remove it. There is a shadow, but it is much much smaller than the one you use. Placement is good, but the size is perhaps a little too large. In short, make it look like the English text was actually put there by the studio. This also applies to the fade-out: https://i.imgur.com/KapMICP.jpg It gets very blurry while fading out, so copy that as much as possible without causing too much lag. When I say I don't "like" the shadow for the main text, that's exactly that, an opinion. I would reduce it or blur it, perhaps both, or just remove it completely, but that is just what I would do. (Only using an outline seems pretty much the defacto standard as well though.) If I care I would just change it, that's very easy to do when it is just a single movie. I do think the karaoke looks quite out-of-place, so I *would* suggest to change it. Again, make it look like it is supposed to be there. The credits are completely black and white, so the strong saturated blue color looks very out of place. The font choice also looks completely off as the credits use a thin serif font, while the karaoke uses a soft sans-serif font. And with the video, I think it is a very good idea to drop FLAC and use the space saved and increase the video bitrate instead. Keeping the filesize, but significantly increasing the perceived quality. It is questionable if people can hear the difference between 190 kbps AAC or lossless even with good audio equipment, but it was quite easy for me to tell the video was bitrate starved when looking at the darker scenes even without having something to compare against.

Mate look at the [Small] release if we talk about sound track size, AAC is crap in general so please go somewhere else if you want to rant about that, I'm not sure if you want to say that HEVC is bad and or my encode is low quality, as it is not. Anyways I do not plan to go full nerd mode but I just want to get this out below, also keep in mind constructive feedback is nice, I don't like bashing and certainly not after what happend before. I don't hope you played it with a plex player and then transcoded it as that makes it way worse or just went and use a deprecated and old pack that does not support it well enough. even worse did you re-encode it? Also keep in mind that if the BDMV has issues it is not my problem, I screencap test it against the BDMV and if that shows no glaring issues between the 2 I go through. Thing is if you want unfiltered anime with a decent size and quality this is a good combo, even with Qaac Q127. Apparently I Should say again this encode is not filtered to crap, unlike other encoders that tend to do this. Meaning issues that are in the BDMV are there because it is there in the first place and not added by me or any other codec (transcode). Also I see a stupid coincidence with a fellow uploader (Kuchikurikia) on this site, you seem to use the phrase "bitrate starved", this statement is incorrect as it is quality that is different, not bitrate as this is not on a stuck bit-rate it is on a quality setting. Same applies to the AAC comment, man this gets so stale....... Also on a side note if you are so keen on correcting these issues, join our discord and show us some typesetting work cuz we are looking for more people to help and make the group larger.

@Spiller: I'm with you on not wanting the overhead of lossless FLAC audio, it's silly for the audio stream to be as big as or bigger than the video stream. Luckily, the non-FLAC version you want is actually available as the [Small] release from Nep_Blanc, with an identical video stream: https://nyaa.si/view/1009136 About bitrate starvation, I doubt it's happening at CRF 18, which is high quality for 1080p video. It's quite probably imperfections in the source video. If you think there are such big problems, you should post some comparisons to the source, or even to other encodes. Finally, I think your typesetting feedback is pretty demanding...not all groups will achieve that level of quality.
I'll keep in mind all the advice given, thanks. Not sure I want to go over that film again right now seeing my time constraints in this period, but I just wanted to say that the fade out effect you mention was timed to match the one in the film, but making it blur + fade out as in the film requires skills I don't have yet with Aegisub, sorry for that.
Just to clarify, I did not intend to say that this release is horrible or the people who made it are incompetent. I just gave my honest opinion on what I think could have been better, because nothing is perfect. @Nep_Blanc I didn't notice the other release, I guess I didn't read the description closely enough. Adding a link definitely helps as it stands out while skimming the text. I don't dislike FLAC and I actively seek it for my music collection, but I'm in the 2% of people that care too much about video quality. And seeing bloated audio without bloated video, I say, NOT ENOUGH BLOAT! ; ) I use mpv which I have heard nothing but good things about. If it looks like there is something wrong with my HEVC playback, could you show how it is supposed to look? (No magic filters like nnedi3 upscaling, please.) https://diff.pics/wA7HiY3HqLRN/1 I specifically picked the worst frame for some of those, it is not the entire movie that looks *that* bad. It would be great if more uploaders would post comparisons with the source, BDMVs are rare and I couldn't find it for this movie either. I checked Beatrice-Raws and UCCUSS and they are way more noisy. Are you saying there is no denoising in this encode? Btw, I'm no Kuchikurikia or someone who has a hidden agenda against you if that is what you are implying. I don't hide who I am, you can find me as Spiller or spillerrec elsewhere, it should be fairly easy to find my full name as well if you try. I do know the difference between CRF and CBR, so okay, let's say the psychovisual model was a bad fit to my eyes instead. (Spoiler: constant quality is a lie.) I don't do typesetting nor any other fansub work (as I would never finish as it is never good enough), but I might turn by so you can complain to me directly. @MrSerape Now you got me worried that I literately asked for the impossible, so I will have to try to figure out what is possible and how now...

I didn't filter anything in this encode and most of the times when noise goes away it is that x265 removed that most of the times, not that I always agree with removing noise but some are just BDMV artefacts more or less that are removed. Also note that high motion scenes have their own issues. Aside from that I'm actually looking at some more specific flags to get equally sized encodes with beter quality. Also keep in mind if I set encoder speed preset from medium to very slow or some equivalent with specific flags for anime I would have to consider the outcomes. There is a bitrate and encoding time concern, and if one of both gets objectively too high for the content it will get turned down or not depending. Keep in mind that I encode this at home on my dual Xeon E5 2670 V1 with 32 gigs of ram and a heap of storage, meaning if I want to go faster I really would be looking at expensive equipment.

@Spiller: I'm not seeing huge issues in that screenshot comparison you posted. If you're complaining about the reduced grain when one zooms in, that's really not a big issue under watching conditions (since one would have to be zoomed in to notice it). If you want that level of zoomed grain retention, then look for another release that uses more bitrate. CRF 18 encodes are not meant for pixel-peeping frame comparisons, but for watching.
@Nep_Blanc No complains about the validity of my screenshots? Then I will stand with my opinion. (Okay, web-stream quality is perhaps a bit too harsh, but it is still a far cry from being transparent with the source. Watchable, but not great.) While I do encode comparisons (or did until the new nyaa with its 255 character limit I just found out disappeared), I don't deal with this quality segment. If this was h264 I might have some idea of how well the encode performs, but it is not fair to compare h264 against h265. @MrSerape You need to use the \t tag, see the documentation: http://docs.aegisub.org/3.2/ASS_Tags/#animatedtransform Here is an example of both the stationary style and fade-out (pic2): https://diff.pics/w39Rt-MRZWvB/1 Looks quite a bit neater if you ask me, I added a little bit of blur as well as it looked a bit to sharp otherwise. Changing the style took 5-10 minutes, changing the fade-out is a pain through because it looks better if the timing is frame perfect. My perfectionism is killing me, so I don't know if I will finish it. @coj Great for you, that is why screenshot comparisons are useful, so you can tell if the encode is good enough for you. Like FLAC requires you to have good speakers, decent volume, and a trained ear to tell the difference, spotting video artifacts depends on monitor quality, size of it, and trained eyes. And being able to do so just makes your life more sad. I didn't complain about the grain, I questioned the inconsistency of no filtering and yet a very large difference in grain (more noticeable with movement). I didn't want to raise the obvious conclusion until he confirmed his source was noisy. I'm noticing these issues under normal viewing conditions btw. I was confident enough that I dared to say so without seeing another encode first, not to say actually do frame comparisons. Now that I have seen another encode it sadly just gets too obvious as I know what to look for now...

Nep_Blanc (uploader)

Pixel peeping perfectness is never a thing with lossy encoding also if you watch a show normally and see the non grain Vs grain then the source could be noisy but more than not the BDMV is not that noisy, also note BDMVs are not perfect at all too. Thing is if they fully went lossless it would've been more than a terrabyte for one single movie. Anyways thanks for the constructive feedback in the end.
well there seems to be a lot on the subs posted in the comments (tl;dr all of it) so I'll just keep it short and sweet by saying.. 'English isn't your native language is it?' first scene (after the intro blah blah) and I'm seeing grammatical error after added miscellaneous word that has no place being in the sentence after sentence-that-looks-translated-poorly-from-chinese-dude-reading-out-of-a-bucket after google translate quality sentence. I did pick up on a bit of defensiveness from some of the posts I skimmed but with sub quality on this level it's basically just adolescent preening with a dash of teenage angst. The subs work but they're weak and read like an englishman lost in thailand. all that said (from an overall translator perspective), it's better than some but worse than most.. however it is entirely watchable and I plan to enjoy the crap out of it after I submit this comment. Said comment isn't really my style though so I'll remedy that now. people bitching about the quality of the video or the audio.. jesus christ. Unless you're in your mothers basement on a 60" 4k tv with sennheisers or a 7.1 surround system.. just shut the hell up. Actually if you are, shut the hell up anyway. Get a job ya mooch, and take a shower. For the subs, work on conjugation not constipation.. these things look like they were typed in the midst of taking an abnormally large mind-altering crap, some of which spattered the text.
Criticism is of course welcome, as long as it is backed by reasoning and examples. Seeing you thought of telling us all this means you probably care, so let's do this: you give us examples of what's so bad and how they should be fixed. We'll consider it and eventually fix all the issues of the sort if we actually find it problematic quality-wise. Just so you know, we have a mother tongue English speaker who checked this and the entire QC team has at least a PET qualification. If what you're saying is true we might need to question our institutions I guess :P
I for one am very grateful for the work that went into it and I am of the humble opinion that the most respectful approach for such a fine release is to say thank you and if you do not like some of the details then re do it yourself rather than force the team to respond over and over to your trivial complaints. It is demeaning to ask them to QC to you an unknown person however knowledgeable who was NOT part of the effort. As the lead on a number of projects myself some lasting years, it is not at all helpful to be attacked in public no matter how politely ..you can convey your information privately and not troll for your own ego reasons. Please refrain in the future and to the team i say a deep and heartfelt thank you. AdamEve and by the way i work in the industry and these comments reflect our thoughts in general about fan work ..we respect and admire it and really welcome it..and I felt it needful to make this detailed response when i see this sort of public bullying going on. So glad this fine story is continuing and I have hopes for another season. There is plenty of story and more to come.
My biggest gripe with these formats is that the player embedded in my TV doesn't support them. However, downloading it, sharing it and just re-ripping it for own use is not a problem. It's not like there's any show I can't wait to see for less than an hour.

@atothez do you even use a plex server and player setup? It's really beneficial and it works really well in most cases.
Is there a way for me to get a hold of just the Subs? I want to fix some minor grammatical issues that I just personally can't miss when watching. :(
is it the BD version?
Thank you for the release!!
Tester here, I rechecked audio streams for this anime, it is syncing correctly with the video, and/or any dubbing in this encode should be synced correctly with the video as well.
